Thanks for your
(and all) reply(s); a very encouraging group. I was very tired from an
intense 4-day haul-out on a race boat when placing my request and
completely omitted my desire for a cat-ketch rig. I’m tired of grinding in jibs
(unless while skippering my race boat and have my crew grind but like being
able to adjust two sails to control lateral effort. My inclination also is for
a shallow draft (center-board?) hull configuration if I don’t compromise
ultimate righting stability too much or the ability to stand up to windy
conditions as here on SF Bay (let me know the next time you’re out here). I
have heard good things about the whish-bone booms (but not sleeved sails). Boat
size is always the biggest compromise (nothing like a haul-out for
a "reality check but think the below deck layout can make a big
“livability” difference. I’d love to know all the cat-ketch layouts
that were made. Could you describe yours some?
Thanks again for the great input,
John

I have a Freedom 28 (an old one, hull number 14) and I
love it. I am in Narragansett Bay, where the air is lighter than San
Francisco (I go sailing there two or three times a year). Today
Narragansett Bay was blowing like it was San Francisco, and I had a wonderful
day with my daughter. Nothing needed to be reefed.
We are looking for a larger boat, and it will be a
Freedom cat-katch. I love the wishbone. When it is blowing stink, I
head up and the sail drops into the wishbone, and I can flake later. From
the point of view of being safe and confortable, it is wonderful.
That having been said, much more than a week on
the boat with just my wife and I is pushing it. There is a great deal of
room for a 28’ boat, but it is a 28’boat. If I were going to live on a
boat, I would look at something larger.
