Freedom 28 info

I am looking at the Freedom 28 as a replacement live-aboard/sail-into-
the-sunset-sometime boat. I’ve had my 23-ft twin-keeled Westerly
since '76 with a couple big crises out of San Francisco, but time for
more room (and no jib!). Which F-28’s are center-board vs full keel?
When did they switch from wishbone booms? What was the last year
made? Any available for sale? All info is very welcome. Thanks, John.

John,
I do know one guy who did live on his Mull-era 28. All of that series, built in 87and 88, have fin keels to the best of my knowledge, and the “cat-sloop” rig. Don’t know what variations existed in the earlier Garry Hoyt cat-ketch 28s.

I have a Freedom 28 (an old one, hull number 14) and I love it. I am in
Narragansett Bay, where the air is lighter than San Francisco (I go sailing
there two or three times a year). Today Narragansett Bay was blowing like it
was San Francisco, and I had a wonderful day with my daughter. Nothing needed
to be reefed.

We are looking for a larger boat, and it will be a Freedom cat-katch. I love
the wishbone. When it is blowing stink, I head up and the sail drops into the
wishbone, and I can flake later. From the point of view of being safe and
confortable, it is wonderful.

That having been said, much more than a week on the boat with just my wife and I
is pushing it. There is a great deal of room for a 28’ boat, but it is a
28’boat. If I were going to live on a boat, I would look at something larger.

John:
I believe there was a 28 cat ketch, one
was for sale on Yachtworld.com a few months ago. There is a 29 Hoyt design
which is a baby 32, those were made up until about 87 when the Mull design 28
came on line. There were about 50 of the Mull 28’s made, not sure when the run ended. I have a Mull 28 and there have been
about 4-5 appearing for sale on Yachtworld.com all on the east coast over the
last six months. They seem to be worth more than the 28 cat ketch’s. If
you have any specific questions about the Mull F 28, would be happy to try to
help.

John,

Although I don’t live on my F-30, I do spend a lot
of time on her – roughly two weeks every month. When
I bought her, I was also looking at (and sailed on)
the F-28.

I bought the 30 because I thought the F-28 was going
to be too crowded for me when I had my kids. I don’t
regrest the decision.

The F-30 (with the private aft cabin) is acceptable
for me with guests or kids onboard. We have on
occasion slept six. I think a 30 is the smallest boat
I would want for liveaboard because of the three cabin
arrangement.

I thought about it, but never moved up in size,
because I continue to want a boat that I feel
comfortable singlehanding.

Over the years I’ve felt having the aft cabin with a
door has made a big difference for long stays on the
boat. Because I spend a lot of time on the boat, I
also appreciate the extra storage that the F-30
offers.

I do like the F-32 (Hoyt) configuration too. It has
both an aft cabin and a dinette. I find when I’m
onboard, I usually keep the bulkhead table of my F-30
open with one leaf down. I like the dinette
arrangement on the F-32 because it allows passage fore
and aft while people seated around the the table. With
the table extended fully on the F-30, those seated on
the starboard settee have to stand up and move out of
the way anytime someone needs to pass.

Even for a single, I think the F-28 would be tight
quarters for liveaboard – however with all this said,
there are at least three parties at my marina who live
aboard 27 footers (not Freedoms, of course).

Thanks for your (and all) reply(s); a very encouraging group. I was very tired from an intense 4-day haul-out on a race boat when placing my request and completely omitted my desire for a cat-ketch rig. I’m tired of grinding in jibs (unless while skippering my race boat and have my crew grind  but like being able to adjust two sails to control lateral effort. My inclination also is for a shallow draft (center-board?) hull configuration if I don’t compromise ultimate righting stability too much or the ability to stand up to windy conditions as here on SF Bay (let me know the next time you’re out here). I have heard good things about the whish-bone booms (but not sleeved sails). Boat size is always the biggest compromise (nothing like a haul-out for a "reality check  but think the below deck layout can make a big “livability” difference. I’d love to know all the cat-ketch layouts that were made. Could you describe yours some?
Thanks again for the great input,
John

Tom: I noticed your crew at the club after the Wed night race (I’m skipper of the Columbia 22) and overheard of their successful return from Hawaii and the Pacific Cup. I will stop by this weekend to talk about how your cat-ketch rig did. Thanks, John.
