I am interested in a 1980 F28 cat ketch with wish bone booms. The
pictures seem to show a full keel with attached rudder which seems to
be different from other F28s and 29s that I have seen. Can anyone tell
me about how this boat sails and about any particular problems to look
for. It is a yard repo and “as is/where is” condition of sale so I
would appreciate any guidance that you can offer. Thanks, dave

When I was looking at F-28 CKs, I was told that the first 20 boats
were Centerboarders, and that the subsequent ones had a (sort of) fin
keel attached. If it doesn’t have a fin-keel projecting from the
bottom, then it’s a centerboard-equipped boat. Herm

Re: F-28 CK looking different from other Freedoms of about the same length, the later F28 was a modern looking Garry Mull design of the mid-80s and a part of series that when into productioin in 1986 (F-28, F30, F36, F42). The American F29 is a rather rare bird and is a kind of Hoyt F32 reduced…and made briefly in the mid-80s. All of these later designs have little relationship to the original Hoyt series of Freedoms except that they have free standing masts, were built by TPI, and marketed by Freedom. Sorry, never sailed an older F28 CK…but they look very nice. There are four F28 CKs on Yachtworld.com right now…and one American F29…for comparison. Thanks for the feedback. This particular boat does have a centerboard
and I suspect it is a scaled down version of the F33 CK–at least
from what I could tell from the F33 review in Practical Sailor. Hull
looks very similar and the interior shot shows what I now know is a
tall centerboard trunk that PS objected to in the article. Will be
interested to see the boat in person. Again thanks,
Dave

I’ve sailed an F33 cat ketch for years, never an F28. There’s one
guy with I believe two Atlantic crossings in an F28 CK. I would
favor the centreboard version for it’s safety, versatility and
sailing abilities compared to the long keel version. Indeed the
trunk is huge, but you’ll learn to live with it. If you can find one
of the rare fin keeled F28 ck’s, that would be a good comprimise,
although I can’t say anything about it’s sailing capabilities.
I’ve had a centreboard for years and since a month a fixed keel
Freedom. It takes a lot of getting uesd to, I must say. I’ve run
aground quite few times already.
Good luck with your search
Michel
