Freedom 30 Isomat Boom End Question

Posted by Mark Thompson (methomp@…>)

I am a relativly new Freedom 30 owner. I noticed mid way through the
season last summer that there are 4 internal lines on the boom end. On
my boat one of them is empty. It is the inside port line. Does anyone
know whate this line was for? Is there any place I could get a picture
of the internal workings on the boom? The boat is hull# 78 a 1988 F30.
Is it appropriate to rebuild??

Mark:

My 30 is a few hull numbers younger than yours. I also have only 3 lines on the boom end, so I don’t think you’re missing anything. The only thing that is supposed to be inside, besides line, is an odd-looking double-ended block that is part of the single-line reefing system. When I opened my boom up (by removing the aft end casting), I found that there was a lot of dirt as well as several bird’s nests in there. I cleaned all of that out and then put a hose in from the forward end (make sure the aft end is over the side when you do this). Amazing how much junk came out. I also replaced the three blocks in use on the aft end; friction was greatly reduced.

3 sounds right - an outhaul and two reefing lines? that’s what bright
star has on each of her booms. Nice to know you could put in a third
reef and keep the lines internal though, huh?
