Freedom 33/35 cat ketch noise from centre board

Posted by Martin Lloyd (martinlloyd@…>)

Does anyone know… on a Freedom 33/35 cat ketch centre board version (early
80’s)… does the centre board make much noise (especially down wind)?
ALSO, have there been any problems with this version of the F33???

I have a 33 c/k Yankee Belle. No problem with centerboard noise.

Hi,
I have a 1982 Freedom 33 Cat/Ketch with centerboard (hull
#53) “Folly” in Newport, RI. I am the 2nd owner and remain close
friends with the original owner. I have not experienced any real
noise problems on any points of sail. It does, however, make a heavy
wheazing sound - think porn film with out the tacky music. But
that’s about it. I do hoist it up when anchored if it’s a bit rolly
to avoid the subtle clunking.

Other tip: The previous owner has taken this boat to Bermuda and
back at least 5 times as well as numerous trips offshore to Maine
(all from Newport, RI) and had rigged a safety/retrieval harness for
the board. Apparently on one offshore trip, the centerboard hoist
line parted and the board dropped all the way down. He was forced to
get control of it halfway to Bermuda. Thus he rigged that safety line
(s) upon his return. It goes from the bail at the top of the board
aft over a stainless pin through the top of the trunk and then
forward to another sturdy pin where it is anchored. There’s enough
slack in the safety line (3/4" 3-Strand) so that the board can
travel all the way down without it fetching up.

Also, just before I bought the boat, he had a new piviot point
machined as the original was showing signs of electrolysis and wear.

Hope this helps some
Chris Heaton
