Freedom 33, waterliftbox (muffler), access

Posted by Frank (myslo@…>)

I wonder if I am the first and only F 33 owner who ever has run into
problems with the waterliftbox (some folks call it muffler) Mine
has developed a leak, probably in the connection between the box
and the thru hull fitting, I suspect.

Any experience data out there in accessing it?

Much easier with the engine lifted out of the way. Otherwise hire a contortionist.

First,it pays to be very small. To access the muffler/exhaust,you will
probably have to remove the water heater. I get in the rear space via the
lazarette, and have had to remove the bilge and shower sump pumps first.
After that it is just ceramped and uncomfortable. A helper is required to
hand tools to you. Best of luck.

As J Weinraub wrote it helps to be small but I got my 180lb 77yr old
self down there and did it ok. After you get the water heater out,
which may require cutting some of the sheet metal straps, you will find
that by taking the engine to muffler hoses off you can pull the muffler
forward and actually get to the elbow on the turn up to the antisyphon
fitting The horizontal hose out of the muffler is a relatively long
straight run back to the elbow. That elbow was the problem I had and did
not need to replace hoses. However, every hose clamp was shot. It is
possible to do the thru hull elbow and clamps and the antisyphon clamps
but I am ashamed to say that I didn’t and I will pay the price for that
later on I suppose. However, my advice would be to replace everything
that looks weary, especially any elbows.
I did everything in about three hours and that is the truth. Good luck
and remember you can do it! John jones
