I recently bought a 1993 Freedom 35. The surveyor pointed out that
where the aft part of the wing keel meets the hull was slightly
delaminated. This past winter I had the area ground back, fiberglassed,
and gel-coated.
When the lift took the boat to the water there was a fair amount of
cracking in this area. It doesn’t seem to be leaking, but I am
wondering if anyone else has had this experience and what you did about
it.
Thanks - Mac

Mac,
At first glance this sounds as though the boat went aground,
hard, where there is lot of upward force concentrated at the rear of
the keel. I would have the area sounded out by an experienced plastic
hammer tapper to see if there’s structural damage to this area.

Herm - Thanks very much, but this was definitely not the cause. The surveyor tapped out the entire hull and we took a look in the bilge area. I once looked at a Sabre that ran hard aground and that was a mess.

The 35 hull was built with a rectangular opening so it could
accomodate either the fin or wing keel. When the keel was installed
a certain amount of filling and fairing was necessary and
unfortunately this sometimes resulted in blisters or other slight
imperfections anywhere along the join.
My guess is this is what you are seeing and if so, it is nothing to
be concerned about.

Stan - Thanks very much. Do I don’t have to worry about delamination? Is this area solid fiberglass?
