Freedom 40/40 Keel Aft Delam

Last fall during a survey my keel was found to have delaminated in the aft section. It would drop a few inches when the boat was lifted. I am having it removed and re-bedded soon. I have seen messages that have said that removal can be difficult and not good for the boat but it seems to be the only way to make sure that there is no further damage to the boat that we cannot see. The surveyor thought that maybe we could just tighten the bolts and re-epoxy but I am going the more difficult route to make sure the boat is safe and it is able to be sailed long distance. Has anyone removed the keel on a Freedom? 40/40 or not? I’d like to hear how it went and what the ultimate cost was.

A previous owner grounded my 40/40 very hard and seperated the keel joint. I dont know what he paid to fix it but youd never know looking at her today that she had her keel removed and re attached. Id have to imagine that the price will be considerable but also difficult to estimate because you dont know why the keel is moving. You are doing the right thing by wanting to drop the keel though. Better to be safe than to be sorry.

Thank you for the response Eben. Do you know who did the repair? I am on Long Island Sound.

It happened 20 years ago and the details are lost to time. I wish I knew.
I would think that mystic shipyard could tackle this task. I know they have done quite a bit of work on a few F35’s.
