Freedom 40 Cat-Ketch

Posted by normfriberg (nfriberg@…>)

I’m about to purchase a 1979 Freedom 40 Cat Ketch. The survey was
done today and she passed with flying colors. I was wondering whether
anyone out there has experience with this boat; how she sails, special
considerations of the wishbone rig, etc. Your advice would be
appreciated.

Thanks,
Norm in NJ

Hi Norm . I have owned a freedom 40 cat ketch since 1981. E-mail me with any questions and I would be happy to answer based on my personal experience.

Hi Jon,

I’m buying a boat called “Long Reach” curreently in Poughkeepsie, NY. If you search Yacht world, you will see it: She’s the only Freedom for sale in Poughkeepsie. I think the price is fantastic. Although the boat is worn, (she’s a 1979, after all) she’s been lovingly taken care of and has many spares, extra equipment, etc. The survey went very well. I would just like to talk with someone, other than the owner, who has experience sailing these boats.

Thanks for the reply,
Norm

Welcome Norm, there are a lot of well-informed and happy Freedom owners here, who always seem able to help. I have a smaller, sloop rigged Freedom but like most of the others here, love it. I’m sure you will be able to get specfic info from cat owners. Welcome to the family.

She’s currently named Long Reach, sailing out of the Poughkeepsie Yacht Club in NY. I intend to rename her, and the bank needs the new name for the closing papers.

Hello Norm,

Congrats on your purchase. I purchased “Fantasy” Hull # 60Freedom 40
cat-ketch in November 2004. I live aboard in the San Francisco Bay
area. My F-40 has new aluminum wishbones, full batten sails with
Harken Bat-cars. It is rigged just like a nonsuch. The wishbone
elevation is not adjustable. After owning many sloops and cutters
over the years I fell in love with the freestanding concept. All of
my fellow sloop sailors pooh poohed my purchase, but I have no
regrets. I’ve always liked more traditional looking boats. All of
these new Beneteau’s etc. look like big floating tennis shoes. No
character at all.
My F-40 sails well. Very fast on a reach or run(easy to wing & wing
the sails), and does better than I expected on the wind. Here on San
Francisco Bay the wind always blows 20 - 35 kts in the summer, and I
never have to reef the mizzen until aboat 22 kts on the wind. If
your F-40 has the old sails that wrap around the masts, I would
recommend getting rid of them and upgrading. A lot of F-40 have been
converted to standard booms (no wishbones)which is preferred by many
owners. Anyway, good luck and if you have any questions contact me.

I am the proud owner of “Fantasy”, a 1981 Freedom 40, hull # 60.
Several months ago I asked this group for advice regarding the removal
of the forward deck hatch, for the purpose of rebedding due to a leak.
I do not recall who responded with instructions on the removal
process, and this person had recently performed the same project. I
removed the bungs in the teak hatch frame, removed the screws, broke
the seal under the hatch frame where it contacts the teak frame, and I
still cannot get the teak frame to come out. I assume it may be held
by some adhesive or sealant near the top of the frame. I would
appreciate it if the person who previously responded could provide any
further direction. Maybe you had the same experience? My next option
is to cut out the frame and build a new one. I don,t really want to do
that! Also, did you also have to remove the wood batts that the
headliners attach to to access the through bolts for the hatch? Any
advice from anyone in this group would be greatly appreciated.

I originally thought they were screwed on, but they just turn when I try to remove them. Another F-40 owner removed his hatch also, and they were through bolted.
