I hope that the weather systems at this time of the year give you fair winds. Where did you start from? When I last crossed the Atlantic from Bermuda to Horta (1,800 miles), I went on to Gibraltar. If you have not sailed through the Straits before, it is like a funnel. Ten knots one end can become 40 knots at the other end. Seas in high winds are short and rough. Approaching from the West, you want to be sailing downwind. You can always shelter in Tarifa on the Spanish side or Tangiers on the Moroccan side. Fuel in Gib is the least expensive in the Med. Gib has no sales tax and is cheap for tobacco, perfumes and hard alcohol but buy wine in Spain. Morrisons is the largest supermarket and has English brands. My first sail on a Freedom was a 40CC. Be aware of the orcas near the entrance to the Straits at the Atlantic end. They like to play with the rudders of yachts. Bon voyage!. Chris

Yeah, winds were perfect at 12-17 knots, giving us a beam reach sleigh ride down.

The plan at the moment is to explore the Canaries for a season. Can still get easyjet flights for £40 and marina mooring fees much cheaper than UK. The wife likes the idea of winter sun so a no brainer.

Have 90% decided to sail down to Brazil after that, more than likely solo.

The med is tempting as well though…
