Freedom Cat Ketch 33 - general info needed.

I’m considering buying a 1982 Freedom Cat-Ketch. I’d like to get
more information on the lifespan of the carbon-fiber masts, as well
as general feedback on these boats. Any information you can provide
would be really, really helpful.

Thanks!

The spars based on all I have read are
pretty bullet proof. They had a life time warranty to original owner. I spent
an afternoon in an aircraft plant in Colorado last week. They are making entire airplanes out of this stuff now.
The spars and the material are battle tested!

Hi, I am interested in your answer. I have a Freedom30 from 1980 and I broke my main mast last season. How can I check this about life time warranty, any idea? Tore Gislen , Sweden.

unfortunately the lifetime warranty is not transferable; I recently purchased #20 Express and spoke to Mark E. about that same point. I’ll hope that I don’t have a mast failure in the future as TSP quoted me around $25K per spar. good luck to you

I recommend the 33Cat-Ketch highly having owned one 14years. I am
still using wishbones and two ply sails. Luv it. Have never found
any problems. Have made single-handled trips to an thru the
Bahamas many times. E-mail me if you want to pick my brain?

article written by Bill Sandifer in one of the "Good Old
Boat"issues. In addition I have a F-33 for sale in the Long Island
Sound area.If you are interested,I can send you a spec sheet and I
can also Fax you the article from Good Old Boats.Get in touch and
maybe we can work something out .The boat is fully equiped and ready

I’m on my third Freedom. They have had masts come down in the past, but it is very unusual. I would have them visually inspected for cracks and if all is well, not worry about it.

The 33 was built when Freedom was doing a superior job on the interiors. The later Mull boats (these are the ones that I have owned) are finished nicely, but not as well as their earlier boats. The 33, however, is not going to win any races. She will perfrom best off the wind (beam reaching should be a blast!) and with a fairly still breeze.

The 33 was built before they figured out how to stop blistering with isopholic resins. It is best (with any used boat) to have all three surveys done; structural, mechanical, and rigging.

Good luck -

Actually, these boats do win races. Castaway (UK built F35= US 33) won
several ocean races with her previous owner, including Canaries to Barbados
in 16 days. Even we have had some modest success, against more modern
fully crewed boats, when it isn’t just a quick bash around the harbour bouys.
You do need that beam reach for best ressults, though!

Hi Tore, you’ll have to check with Freedom/Legacy on Rhode Island,
USA. Mind you, the warranty is only valid for the FIRST owner of the
mast. The warranty - as far as I know - only covers own failure of
the spar, so external causes for breakage, such as bridges,
lightning, (hurricanes?) are not covered.

We here on the board are very interested to learn about the cause of
breakage of you mast. Could you say something about that?

I believe that a 1980 Freedom 30 was made by the UK licensee, not Freedom in RI. The first Mull 30s were built in 1986, I believe.

Hello, we just purchased a Freedom 33 Hull #2. Although we are not the original owner and the mast was broken in a hurricane, the sales were left on the boom and rode up the mast during the storm and subsequently broke the mast in two places. Having spoken several times with Freedom, I am unaware of the mast guarantee, although the specific question never came up. I am presently trying to locate a replace mizzen mast. We love the boat. Also own a Nonsuch 26 and decided to move to the Freedom for a larger boat with the same characteristics as the Nonsuch. We are currently selling the Nonsuch and our endeavors are on restoring the Freedom 33. “Lorman, Alvin J.” <ajlorman@…> wrote: I believe that a 1980 Freedom 30 was made by the UK licensee, not Freedom in RI.
