Freedom catketch freighter

Posted by michel.capel (michel.capel@…>)

Hello all,

Here in the NL’s, a couple of idealists are building a 100’ sailing
freighter. They want to go tramp freighting and trading eco products
around the world.

Does anyone remember that there once was a design for a 60’ Freedom
catketch for freighting? It had a 15 m3 (530 q.ft.) cargo hold
between the main and mizzen mast and the living area in a deck house
aft of the mizzen.

Long ago, I fantasized about earning a small living with this boat,
sailing around the south Pacific islands and supplying the local
island communities with their necessities.

I used to have a sketch of the Freedom freighter, does anyone still
have this?

Why don’t you email Garry Hoyt and ask if he knows or

Hi Michel,

I only have knowledge of the 70ft three masted Freedom Kriter Lady II,
but that was designed for racing.

But as a member of the Junk Rig Association (JRA) I read about a 100ft
junk rigged freighter with three freestanding masts and an enormous
centerboard and a pram bow. A plans sketch of this boat was on the cover
of Newsletter 30 of the JRA way back in 1995. The boat was supposed to
be built by United Trade Sail, Postfach 7905, CH-6000 Luzern 7,
Switzerland, an “association for the promotion of maritime transport of
freight ships using solely the wind as their propulsive force”. I never
heard about this project again and I do not know if they succeeded. As I
have no access to a scanner I can not post the sketch mentioned above.
Maybe a friend can scan this for me, if the picture is wanted urgently.

Greetings
Peter

Michel,
I recall a 3 masted Freedom of 60 or 70 feet but I think it was more
of a yacht than a freighter.

For those fantasizing about roaming the warm tropical waters and
making a living by using their boat as a freighter, I have a book
recommendation. Find a copy of “The Last Voyage” by Harold Stephens.
Great book.

Is it getting cold in the NL yet?

This is a Sponberg design that would suite.

I forgot to mention: it was a design by Freedom Yachts UK, not by
Garry Hoyt, as my memory serves me right.

Thanks Peter, but there’s no urgency. I’m just interested in this
catketch freighter design; it was a very nice looking boat.
Thanks again,
Michel

Hi, Dave, i’m going to look for that book. It’s not very cold here
yet; 10 to 15 degrees celcius. We 've had a very nice oktober, with a
couple of sunny weekends. Look at www.flickr.com/photos/alabama_queen
to see some pics of the 2007 European Freedom meeting, including a
race with three F44’s!

Michel! Outstanding work on Alabama Queen. It makes me regret that
we have not been chronicling our refit well.

Maybe some day we will be in Europe for the gathering. Is there a set
place and time of year? Kerri and I plan to be cruising full time
beginning next summer/fall with no set plans for routes.

I know I’ll have some questions for you concerning your mast seals at
the partners. Was that “spar tight”?

Michel,
Glad you still have some sailing weather there. I just finished
putting a Ranger 33 together and have had a few sails. It’s not a
Freedom but a rather classic Mull design.

If you have trouble finding a copy of that book in the EU let me know
as I can probably find a copy here.

Michel,

I recall seeing this sketch, I think in a Freedom advert somewhere. They showed
a generic
freighter, and also a vessel said to have been fitted out as a mobile surgery to
offer a
peripatetic dental service in Polynesia. I’m not sure if this was the nautical
equivalent of
‘vapourware’, or was actually built. I suspect that it would be difficult to
finance such a
venturewithout governmental funding, as communities small enough or poor enough
to
have no dentist would be unlikely to be able to afford this expensive looking
yacht.

I think that any commercial transport relying primarily on sail is going to be a
hobby or
else have external funding in this day and age, but that might change if all the
oil gets
used up.

Should the sketch turn up, I’ll try and scan it for the photo section.

Regards,

Gerald Freshwater

new.
Have fun with the Ranger!

thanks Gerald,

I now know that it was not a 60 footer, but ‘just’ a Freedom 40! I
wonder how cramped the living space would be if there’s a 530 sq.
ft. cargo hold. I guess the skipper would need to be very much in
love with his first mate to keep the atmosphere on board okay.

Our newpaper published a piece the other day in the travel part
about a small pacific atol with a few inhabited islands that have
difficulty in getting supplies to their island. Money is not their
problem, it’s just that nobody wants to go their with a commercial
ship because their is not enough cargo. What the islanders do, is
this: theré one chap from the island stationed permanently on a
bigger island in the vicinity (I believe Rarotonga) and his job is
to convince yachties to go to his atol and take supplies with them.
The guy who wrote the article had so much stuf packed in his cabin,
that he had to crawl along the ceiling over the boxes to get to his
bunk. He was received at the island as a messiah, and stayed there
month and was treated like a king. nice!
