Freedom Owners Group Formation Status Update - May 10, 2006

Posted by Alan (akusinitz@…>)

Its been a while since we were taking active steps to forming a more
organized and active Freedom Association so I thought I’d give an
update.
This Yahoo group was created for discussion and planning regarding
this association as some members of the other Freedom yahoo groups
did not want this discussion “cluttering” those boards as they
prefered them to be focused on technical/boat discusions.
Here is the update as far as I am aware:

  • domain names were registered for future use.
    www.freedomyachtowners.org and www.freedomyachtowners.com
  • these domains are not actively hosted and will not be until the
association is formed and funding is available. The idea is we could
have some control over security, spam, and to ensure archives,
photos, etc. have adequate disk space and are permanently avialable.
At this point there is no intention to try and duplicate or replace
    the yahoo discussion groups.
  • we have a list of people who volunteered to help “build” the
    assocation.
  • we have lists of ideas submitted to be pursued by the association

The initial plan was to file paperwork to form a not-for-profit for
the association to provide a formal infrastructure for dues/funding
and expense payments. This has not occurred and no one is pursuing
it at this point.

Personally I am hesitant to have an individual simply collect
dues/contributions and handle this informally. Perhaps this is an
option but I am not sure of tax and liability issues of this
approach.

If there is still interest and someone would like to suggest an
approach to handling this then we can proceed further.

I have a full archive of suggestions people made last year and
things folks volunteered for. I’m still interested in proceeding.

Alan,
What, exactly, would be the purpose of forming a more organized
and active Freedom Association? From my readings in this Yahoo group, we
are a very diverse and geographically scattered group of Freedom owners.
While I enjoy the commentary and comraderie generated by this Yahoo group,
I’m not sure what advantage there would be to form another association. I
sail for about 4 months along the coast of Maine each summer. I would
support an association if it were to provide some value to me and others
like me. I am the treasurer of a small yacht club in Pemaquid
Maine. Speaking from my experience, in any volunteer organization, a few
people will do all the work. It will require a very committed and
dedicated person to spearhead this issue. I’d be interested in your
thoughts on the matter.
Thanks,

Earlier postings on this board as well as
many on the other board before this board was created provide ideas for and
express interest in an association. Of course the value will depend on the
willingness of volunteers. At the time there seemed to be a critical mass of
volunteers and some good ideas.
At this point we’re stalled until
someone steps up to propose/resolve the formal aspects of formation from a
business/tax perspective.
Regards,
Alan

Thanks for resurrecting this discussion. I
was in favor of and remain in favor of forming an association. I think the
incredible interest in these yachts as demonstrated by the daily email traffic
on the Yahoo site suggests a lot of continued interest in helping each other
with the challenges of owning what is now becoming an aging fleet. There are
many other successful yacht owners associations for other manufacturers whose
success also supports a decision to move forward. Having said all that, the
Freedom owners seem to be an eclectic bunch, the association may be a bit like
herding cats, but membership is optional, and the group will have to deal with
some of the personalities involved. I for one would like to see the group move
forward.

I agree. I love my Freedom and am years behind most of
y’all in knowledge base. So I relish yours
vicariously. Since TPI demised signs
of future production or distribution, we’re all we’ve
got. And so, are benefitted by sticking together in
whatever ways. Technical or affiliative. Sign me up.

The Cal list is similarly helpful, eccentric,
opinionated at times, and a vast deep array of stored
info and techniques. And they have get togethers and
regattas here and there.

It’s all good, in the service of perpetuating good
boats, yes?

I think we have enough interested “volunteers”
to move forward. The key right now is deciding how to “form” it to
handle the money side of things in a legal way. The aspects of the association
activities that would move forward would be entirely depenendent on what the
volunteers/members choose to pursue. I’ll post all the ideas we received
once we move forward on formation.
