Hey out there
Anybody have any experience with (and comment on) the Froli sleep
systems (add-on plastic springs that “build” a box-spring under your
bunk cushions?
Practical Sailor reviewed them awhile back…they have a website out
there, but I was looking for first-hand comments if anyone has any.
The weak US dollar has kicked the price of their systems up to about
double what it was in 2004…I guess I should have bought back then.
Also…If anyone is “near or on” their Aft Cockpit F-40 Cat Ketch,
would you mind sending me the measurements for the V-Berth…length
down centerline (including filler piece)…max width at aft
end…width at forward end…length along either side. This would be
really helpful to me, as I’m 165 miles from the boat at the moment.
Thanks

John,
I don’t know the Froli sleep system, but from your description I
think I know what it is like. I considered using the under matrass
system from IKEA. You can saw the battens to the required width and
place the plastic bearers where you need them; at the end of the
battens or half way. And it’s much cheaper than the custom ‘marine’
under matrass systems. As you know, everything with ‘marine’ stamped
on it, costs at least twice as much.
Best,
Michel

I purchased a froli system for the v-berth
on my F-33. It did help the comfort. However, in our case it turned out the
foam in the cushions was just no good anymore. I always felt like I was
sleeping downhill no matter how much I raised the cushion at one end.
Apparently this is symptomatic of worn out foam since the heavy part of your
body compresses the end your head is at more then it should.
One advantange of the froli is it allows
airflow under the mattress so it prevents mildew. Of course there are cheaper
ways to accomplish that.
When our new cushions arrive we’ll
try them with and without the Froli. I would say if you’re looking for a
softer feel then the Froli is helpful.

You are right about the cost when you
attach the word “marine” to it. There are more gotchya
because is exposed to salt water, moisture, weather elements……on and on…each
adding $100 to its own category. A couple of suggestions given to me were
look at RV and camper stuff, a little less in cost for the same stuff. I
found a (some kind of plastic) faucets and the difference was almost $30 for
the same thing made by the same manufacturer for marine and RV. I think
the most fun about own a boat is first and I speak for myself, I did not have a
lot left over after buying the boat for goodies. So is shop and shop, or
be creative or like in your example something from Ikea that does the same
thing. I like it! So what do I look up in the Ikea catalog?

I’m not sure if these things are in the catalog, but they belong to
the subject of bedframes and things like that. It’s a pack of
flexible wooden battens, curved (use them with the curve upwards)
with a whole bunch of plastic bearers that you slip on the ends of
the battens. Under the heaviest parts of your body you can also use
a bearer in the middle of the batten.
