Hi Freedom Lovers: Has anyone experience with the G 10 sail plan?
I am still considering replacing my F33 Cat Ketch wrap around sails.

Is this the system Gio Schouten had on his UK built F35 CK “Samiel”? He sent out
some
data and pictures which look very interesting, but seem to cause some
compression
loading on the mast. The advantage was full length battens giving a big roach on
the sails,
retaining the wishbones, and not needing a sailtrack to be nailed to the mast.
There was
some correspondence about it last year, I think, but there was a problem with
putting the
pictures into the files at that time.
I suspect Gio is the only person with any great experience of this sailplan,
although
apparently quite a few others have seen it from well astern!

That boat is a Freedom 40 or 44, I think, which is his current boat. I have
taken the liberty
of putting a picture in the “miscellaneous” album, of “Samiel” on a run. I’m
sure he’ll give
more info when he is next on the bulletin board, as he is a frequent and

That’s a pretty interesting rig. It wouldn’t work for Bright Star -
she’s got a radar on the mizzen and a deck/steaming light on the
main, but it’s pretty obvious what the advantages of a system like
that is. Very nice.

We had a Freedom race here in the NL’s last summer, and Samiel with
her G10 rig almost sailed away from the two F44’s in the party. This

Your posting is much appreciated. I have a question about how the
wishbone is “hung” from the mast and sail. On my U.S. F33, 1982,#55,
a rope “girdel” extends from the left front (port) of the wishbone,
back thru a gromet in the wrap-around sail, around the rear of the
mast and then foreward thru a gromet on the right side and then out to
tie on the right front of the wishbone. Sounds complicated but is
very simple and I think a better system than used sails I have seen
from the similar U.K. F35 rig. Hoisting the sail also lifts the
wishbone about two feet or so. I have no problems with this wishbone
system in use for the last 16 years. I can conceive of adapting the
G 10 rig to this type of system but what you are using may be better?
So, please, a description and clarification. I am reluctant to
drill any new holes in the masts unless desperate. Thanks, John Jones

John,if I understand the situation correctly , you have fixed to
wishbone at a specific height and by hoisting the sail the wishbone
is automatically hoisted aswel to reflect the correct angle of the
wishbone. The only thing that is different is the fact that by means
of a block(on the mast)connected at the point were the wishbone rope
is hoisted, I can either hoist or lower the wishbone directly from
the cockpit.I hope this makes some sense.

Rudy, Thanks for reply. I can do that likewise and it also now
becomes clear how the reefing system will work. Sounds like a great
system and now all I have to do is locate a sail-maker willing to
venture into the “unknown”. If you have the actual dimensions of
your luff and foot (all eye to eye), batten lengths, and height of
first batten above the “tack” it would be very helpful. I can scale
the info from drawings and pics but am unclear about your UK built 35
luff as a starting point. John

Hi Freedom Lovers: Rudy has graciously provided some much needed

Do you Yahoo!? Everyone is raving about the all-new Yahoo! Mail Beta.

Hi Jack, hi all,
Would be nice if you could post the photos to the PHOTOS section of the board!
Besides: there is a F35/33 for sale in Plymouth/UK with zippered pockets around the masts. Have a look at it at boats.com. I contacted the owner some time ago and this is what he mailed to me:
…My sails are a modification to the original in that they have a zipped sleeve around the mast. This cuts down the weight aloft by almost half. I notice the difference when sailing as i have to reef less. The sail is also easier to shape using the outhaul and halyard tension as well as being much easier to stow.
I have two sets of sails, one by Dolphin Sails of the UK (on web) and one set made by a local sailmaker. In both the profile is about 2 meters so you can get “inside” the envelope to reach halyards etc - which run inside the fold. In one set the wrap is of a lighter material to make stowing even easier.
The single skin also makes reefing more effective…
May be this is of interest to some of you,
Greetings
Peter

G 10 rig to this type of system but what you are using may be
better?
So, please, a description and clarification. I am reluctant
to
drill any new holes in the masts unless desperate. Thanks,

Hi Peter, I was unable to locate the UK zippered boat you told me about, and I am curious to see if he used the same triangle shape. I changed the shape with a boom on top so the sail looks like one wing of a world war 2 air plane. Just did this and havent been able to really test it out having only been out once. Ive only done the mizzen and you can see the differance between the 2 sails. Iam quite excited about it as it seems to solve the full batton problem, Plus you dont get turbulance behind the mast, like you do when you go to a track one ply system.I don’t know how to post photos yet, Jack on “CHAMELA” Jacks wing sailPeter Schäfer <petersch@…> wrote:Re: G 10 Sail plan Hi Jack, hi all, Would be
nice if you could post the photos to the PHOTOS section of the board! Besides: there is a F35/33 for sale in Plymouth/UK with zippered pockets around the masts. Have a look at it at boats.com. I contacted the owner some time ago and this is what he mailed to me: …My sails are a modification to the original in that they have a zipped sleeve around the mast. In both the profile is about 2 meters so you can get “inside” the
envelope to reach halyards etc - which run inside the fold. In one set the wrap is of a lighter material to make stowing even easier. The single skin also makes reefing more effective… May be this is of interest to some of you, Greetings Peter Jack George wrote: Hi John, Remember me, I have a printed 4pg.brosure on gio,s saill plan.
