Garhauer mast collar

Posted by wink50109 (jlittle@…>)

I own a 39 Express and several years ago I purchased two vangs from
Mark Garhauer. I explained to Mark that I had installed a unique
seal around the mast {thats another story}which I did not want to
disturb with their collar. So together we designed a fitting that
attaches to the original bail on the aluminum mast collar. It works
fine, is less expensive and easy to install. Anyone interested
could contact Mark at Garhauer.

Sorry to jump in on this thread, but could someone let me know the
advantages of having a solid boom vang vs the standard block and
tackle that comes standard on the Freedom rig?

Thanks Paul.

I did it to get the lazyjacks out of the way when making sail. The upper
battens will catch on the jacks.

Sorry to jump in on this thread, but could someone let me know the
advantages of having a solid boom vang vs the standard block and
tackle that comes standard on the Freedom rig?

Thanks Paul.

So how can I contact Mark Garhauer? I am interested in adding a
solid vang and will need the mast collar to go with it. I have
seen
the collar on other Freedoms - some with brackets that run
between
the mast collar seem and the mast ring deck bolt and others with
just the rubber. It would seem that aome mechanical connection
to
the deck collar is recommended for these things?

The issue of vang collar slippage just came up last week

seen
done
is to add stainless brackets from the port and starboard
bolts
that
compress the vang bracket around the mast to the aluminum
mast
collar that is bolted to the deck. You might also lash the
vang
collar on the centerline just under the vang axle down to
the
mast
collar. This two or three point approach should keep the
vang
bracket from moving. Good luck, Mark Edwards, Freedom

seems
to
have moved a bit in a year, but I’m not sure if that was
due
to
insufficient tightening or the sleeve itself.

My Garhauer rigid vang has a rubber material between the
mast
and
the
stainless mast collar. It is simillar to inner tube
rubber.

The main advantage of a rigid vang is that you can discard the topping lift. In this maner the boom never drops on your head or… Also, very practical when reefing as there is no need to reset topping lift. In very light airs ( racing ) you can delete the weight of the boom .

Holds up the boom (no topping lift needed) Much more powerful than a soft vang. My Garhauer has a 20:1 ratio, while most soft vangs are 4, or occasionally 5:1 ratio. This obviously facilitates sail control over a much wider range of conditions. Also, you don’t have to leave your “jacks” rigged as a topping lift.
