General ? F-35 Construction

Posted by Diane & Bob (oxymoron114@…>)

Boat owners here have been terrific. Thanks for all the help.

We have a general and maybe a little bit of an unsophisticated
question about the hull construction that perhaps someone can
answer…Is the hull solid fiberglass from the waterline down or is
it all balsa core. I read some of the articles about this boat that
state “construction is an endgrain balsa sandwiched between multiple
layers of unidirectional & biaxial fiberglass…” for this particular
boat.

All of the boats we have owned have all been solid fiberglass with
balsa-cored decks. Moisture penetration concerns us although perhaps
it shouldn’t. Object are not supposed to strike the hull of course,
but sometimes it’s not something one has control over.

If a yacht with a hull constructed such as ths one has damage done
with a subsequent repair, can one tell after the fact if there was
water penetration or not? Can a good surveyor tell or is it
something that will be discovered until it’s too late?

Could some kind sailor take a few momemts to enlighten us? TIA.

We have found the answer to our questions by doing a bit of digging.

The archived messages of the old Freedom board was most helpful.

D&B,
What are the answers to your hull core questions? I too would
like to know.

From what we read, hull is all balsa core. There’s a lot of info at
http://www.objectarchitects.nl/freedomboard/index.jsp, which is the
location of the old Freedom message boards that someone here took the
time to cleanup.

I also did a “google” search and came up with several articles that
discuss the hull construction.

I don’t know specifically about the 35, but on the 30, the hull is cored to the turn of the bilge or thereabouts. The keel is attached to solid glass, and through hulls go through solid glass as well.

My F-33 seems similar but with one or 2 thru hulls through the cored area but in fiberglass tubes to protect the core.
