Searched the archives and I don’t see this in there. Has anyone had
experience with removing the Gudgeons? Mine are covered with rust from
the last owner using regular nuts on the rudder bolts. That rust has
also gotten all over the transom that I’m trying to prep for paint.
I’ve gotten the port and starboard side painted along with the bottom
painted. Now, I just need to tackle the transom. I guess I could
paint around it, but I’d rather remove it.
I believe that you can remove the gudgeons. I think I did on mine
back in 1994 to re-caulk under them.
Access to the nuts is via the starboard lazarette. You’ll need to
reach into the space between the transom and the back of the cockpit.
You’ll probably need a long box wrench to get to the nuts, along with
someone else to hold a wrench on the bolts.
