Hi - we’re new to freedom yachts - just bought a Freedom 21 and getting used to different handling etc. Our kids are keen to take it out - how stable are they in heavy gusts etc? I know it’s something we will learn with time but some advice from voices of experience would be great on this or any other matter regarding the 21.
Many thanks

Welcome to the F21 club…I’ve been sailing my F21 #104 DK Cat for
a little over a year now. I mostly race her so I’m not prone to
reefing sail. I’ve experienced 30-35+ winds and just drop my jib. I
have not reefed the main, just let the traveler down and reach off,
the boat will fly and by keeping her flat I gain hugh lift from the
keel. I’m the smallest boat in the fleet and have
consistently “skyhooked” (beat the competition by 1/2 to 1/4mi) in
every race. As long as I can stay with them on the first upwind leg,
I can pass on the first downwind leg and leave them in the dust. Even
though I have to run forward to change headsails, I get my spinnaker
up faster than a five man crew. Been sailing mostly against Catalina
25’s with fixed keels. I don’t try to point with them, I just go for
boat speed and keep her flat…the keel lift has always brought me
right back up in front of the competition. This little boat can take
a lot of wind and it seems the more the better. I do 5 to 6kts all
the time upwind and have done almost 10 on a run in 35+ with the
spinnaker and full main…the boat was flying off the
waves…haaaaayhooooo. I’m a little crazy I suppose, but with
the reefing system I’ve always felt comfortable…knew I could
always dump in a reef at any time…and douse the spinnaker in a
heartbeat. There is so much control with this design…it makes my
competition crazy that I can do this all single handed…
