Hi,
Does anyone else have an electric Harken 48 2 Speed winch and has had the disconnect rod stuck in the mechanism and won’t release? Any help on how to get it out would be great, or any idea why it might be stuck?
Many thanks

Might want to check out the Harken site - here is one link to a 48.2 electric
These do need to be thoroughly cleaned regularly. Hope this helps.
Thank you. I’ve gone through loads of the manuals but can’t find any that have the disconnect pin.
This is the pin that I have through the centre. When pressed in, it bypasses the motor and when released, you can use the motor - Harken Winch Disconnecting Rod - B60 – MAURIPRO Sailing
My winch wont allow you to stick a winch handle in it if its under load. If I lock the main halyard or mainsheet cleat and release tension on the winch i can then slide the winch handle in and crank on it. Could this solve your problem?
Benbirnie- your winch may be different from mine. I have the electric Harken 46.2. When assembled, the manual winch handle may be inserted into the top, pushed down to place in manual mode. Removing the manual winch handle regains electric mode. Under the top cap there is a long rod that in manual mode disengages the motor. If the rod is stuck in the down position the winch will be in manual mode. I can hold the rod and lift to remove it. If it doesn’t remove then something else is going on. There is no “pin” per se. have you completely disassembled the winch - take a pic —
Hey, apologies, it’s my terminology. I do mean a rod and it sounds like we have the same setup. With a little bit of pulling and wiggling I have managed to get the rod out. When the rod was pushed fully in, the winch handle wouldn’t sit in properly and kept popping out. Now that I have managed to get it out, I’ll take it all apart and see iif I can spot anything.
Here is a manual from Harken that might help. Since Harken is still around you might be able to give them a call.
Perhaps the motor clutch is stuck ?

Thank you. I’m going to give the winch a full service, only just bought the boat, so not sure when it was last done and see if that fixes it, and will give them a call too.
Cheers
Winch cleanup and lubrication is also on my spring list. Still have old Barients.
After winch service you may find the issue is on the motor side below deck where the end of the disconnecting rod engages/disengages the motor clutch.
Ah ok. I’m hoping that the centre screw wasn’t down all the way or there is some dirty blocking it from sitting properly. Fingers crossed a good clean and service will do the trick
Just wanted to say that after a lot of degreasing, scrubbing and reassembling the winch is now working as expected. The disconnect rod is now disengaging. Thank you all
