Has anyone tried sail downhauls?

Posted by rick_simonds (rick_simonds@…>)

I’m kicking around the idea of rigging downhauls on my F32’s main and
jib. I almost never have real crew, I tend to sail with un-
knowledgeable (but really enjoyable) people. I’d like to be able to
get both sails all the way down, absolutely singlehanded, from the
cockpit.

I’m thinking a light line from the head of each sail, down through the
hanks or shackles on the luff, through a small turning block then back
to the cockpit.

I’ll play with it in the next few weeks but I’m wondering if anyone
has tried it and can tell me where the trapdoors are.

Did you find it was worth the trouble and the added cockpit spaghetti?

I’ve also heard of Dave Beirig having some sort of downhaul design for
his Camberspar jib. Has anyone seen one or know anything about it?

I’ve rigged a downhaul on the jib of my F30 and I’m very happy it. Couldn’t be simpler: 1/4" line tied to the head, down to a small block attached to the base of the bow pulpit, then back to the cockpit via Spinlock roller furling line leads. It ends at a nylon cleat attached to the pushpit, so it never actually adds to the spaghetti in the cockpit.

Never tried it for the main and now that I have a Tides Marine Strong Track, I don’t need it.

I do have a main downhaul rigged on my Hoyt32. The main reason for me is that due to singlehanding a good bit I can dowse the main very easy from the cockpit. Also I have a two part main halyard due to the weight of my main (8.5 oz cloth with a lot of reinforcement). The downhaul works great, and eliminates the problem of added friction from the “taykle” rig. Makes reefing a bit easier to.

I also had a downhaul rigged for the jib but had it rigged too far aft. It would foul with folds in the jib as it came down (my own stupidity!). The simple solution is to rig the turning block well forward of the jibstay to preclude that problem. Haven’t done it yet, but plan to do so soon.

If you don’t have one of the low friction sail track systems (I don’t), it’s a good, simple solution to getting your sails down when you want them down.

I have a down haul on my F36 jib. Runs from a block at the base of
the stay, thru small blocks attached to the port toe rail to a
stanchion adjacent to the cockpit with a cleat. Do not rig the down
haul through the hanks, tried that, it binds.

I do it on my f33. I use 1/4 braided dacron as you describe-I put cleats on
the bulkhead to hold them. Works out well

Sure,

On my F33 wraparound catketch the first thing I did when I bought
it, was making downhauls.
