Has no one else used a whisker pole????

Posted by willie doyle (williedoylemom@…>)
Are we the only Freedom sailors to inquire about a whisker pole? With a 100% jib I am wondering if there are not more (recovering racer) sailors who are wondering about how to crank out a few more mini-knots downwind? Or does everyone else with a 35, etc. have a camber spar? We were hoping to find someone’s favorite web site for buying the perfect whisker pole. Any suggestions for URL, size, brand etc? Thanks in advance, Faith

For what it is worth, I use a pole with a camberspar. The latter is so
heavy that it often will not stay out in a light breeze. Of courese,
that is not why I have a pole; I have a winddrifter sail that needs it.

In light winds, I attached my spare halyard to the end of the camberspar fitting and it lifts it and holds it out, a bit like a pole.

I was actually considering a whisker pole for my F38 (I have the caberspar jib thing but since it tacks/jibes so easily sometimes it can’t decide on what tack it likes to stay on while sailing downwind…if it would just stay out there on wing-n-wing and look pretty!) I had asked around and got this contact for a local rigger (I work across the street in Concord). And, I was told that the facility next door to this guy actually makes carbon fibre stuff (kayaks, poles, who knows maybe a Freedom mast!?) I have not contacted this guy, yet, as this isn’t the most important thing on my Freedom ‘to do’ list. Good luck and let me know how it goes. http://www.nerigging.com North East Rigging Systems, LLCKevin Montague, Rigger277 Baker Ave.Concord , MA 01742(978) 287-0060 Cheers, Melissa Acedia F38"Pollution is a silent form of violence" -Ralph Nader

Melissa,
you’re probably talking about Kevin Montague. NERigging shares a loft
with Select Composites. They do excellent work, if you can get
scheduled. I contacted them in late April to put on a deck organizer
and a few other things, and I believe they finally got to me in July,
and that was a small job.

On the other hand, they turned around my new lifelines in 3 days. So
timing is everything.

Re: CamberSpar and downwind sailing. My wife and I just returned from a round trip from Connecticut to southern Florida. We often sailed downwind wing-and-wing…with good advantage, I might add. We found that by over easing the jib sheet…and letting the jib fly well forward…the jib locks in rather nicely. While this works best in winds over 12 true, it still gives you a chance to keep the jib working in lighter air. It is also stable well into the 20’s on a broad reach. In heavier air, everything can be set from the cockpit…which is in the spirit of the design. I must say that is my experience too on my 38. Two years ago we crossed the Albemarle Sound with wind steady 18 out of the north, occasionally gusting to over 20, and we were wing/wing all the way, with jib staying put on leeward side-- and autohelm holding perfect course! This summer we even had success on long downwind sail with about 7-8 knots of wind and jib staying put. Because of the free standing Freedom rig and how far “forward” the boom can go I tend not to worry too much about an accidental jibe and I allow the wind to come further “up” the windward side of boat. That seems to help keep the jib winged out on leeward side.

I use a whisker pole while racing my F25, both to pole the staysail
to windward on downwind legs; and to pole it to leeward on beam
reaches to separate it from the main–increase the slot distance. I
have my staysail on a Harken staysail furler. Very convenient. I
prefer a light weight pole, although the heavier weight, adjustable
pole has its advantages. Charlie

Charlie, Do you not also use a Gunmount and various spinnakers ? Instead, I have been thinking of using a retractable off the deck bowsprit, say 6 - 8 feet long and a huge code zero assymetric to near the mast head. Have it on a flexible furler. It would be used for long , light air, passages. Andre, ’ Scaramanga "“Charlie L.” <clivaday@…> wrote: I use a whisker pole
