In 2016 I made hatch boards for Goodway. Decided in December to make companionway doors - (I like projects and gets old stowing the hatch boards ). I applied varnish 2 weeks ago and it’s still sticky in a few spots - cold weather didn’t help. Installed yesterday. Loved it at night just swinging the doors open and not having to take the two hatch boards out and put back in.
That looks fantastic!.
Did you install a doorbell?
Looks the job could you show a picture of them open please
looks great. Gotta love a highly polished front door.
Great idea !
I’m tempted to do the same on my Freedom 33.
Like you, I find it a tedious task to remove the three panels from the top each time.
Hi Lorenzo - as seen I used acrylic with wood top and center divider ( the top wood is rabbited on the inside so the 1/4” acrylic would be inserted. I cut the top piece at about 45 deg for the opening and that was also offset just to the side of the center vertical wood) as well as wood hinges risers. The hinge risers need to be same thickness as the wood frame ( in my case the teak vertical pieces in front of the hatch board slot) I made a 1/4” plywood mock up and clamped in place using spacers for the sides and bottom. The plywood door edges were inside the hatch board slot but not touching the edges- in far enough to prevent water from getting into the cabin from the door. The “slot” edges of the acrylic were beveled at 45deg to allow the, to swing out and not get caught on the slot edge. I used left and right take apart hinges dattoed in the wood hinge riser. As seen I pre-drilled upper and lower small hole through the hinge wood. With the door clamped in place with spacers, the hinges were placed rigjt next to the teak slot vertical pieces and drilled through the hinge piece through the acrylic the acrylic hole could then be enlarged to fit the wood screw and finishing washed on the inside. mine cost about $180. pics would help so ill look and see what i have. good luck
In the pic - (1) shows the hinge wood riser equal thickness to teak slot cover and 2 small pre drilled holes where I could drill through the wood and into the acrylic
(2) shows the acrylic into the hatch board slot but not all the way
(3) shows the top board offset cut for the doors to open
Thanks for the additional information !
