I appreciate all the feedback concerning my fuel issues .
Has anyone replaced the head and if so what do you reccomend for a
manual type. Do you know what the OEM head type ? I want to replace
with approximately the same height/depth and footprint.
I think you are looking for “buttprint” not “footprint” {:>)

Subject: [freedomyachts2003] Head Replacement
Hi folks and Happy Holidays .
I appreciate all the feedback concerning my fuel issues .

with approximately the same height/depth and footprint.
On my F39 schooner I ripped the entire hose, toilet and holding tank
setup out! Replaced it all with an Airhead composting toilet and
vented it on deck with a nicro 24/7 solar vent. I’ll never go back to
the issues of
leaking, smells, pumpouts… it really works and theres no smell
whatsoever and needs little maintainance or winterizing…just in
case you are ready for something different.

Been thinking about an Airhead for a year now. That’s what I plan to do on
either my present boat or any other boat I may buy.
Or both.

What did you do with the liquid waste that is separated (as I understand it) from the solid waste during ‘delivery’ of waste?See AOL’s top rated recipes and easy ways to stay in shape for winter.
I’m with you 100% Greg. We installed a Natures Head (competitor of the
Airhead and engineered a little better) and used it all last season on
our F28CK. I will never go back to a conventional marine head setup. No
odour, no clogs, no pumpouts, no rebuild kits, fantastic savings in
weight and space with holding tank gone. We will be installing another
on the next boat. Cheers, David
Liquids can either be dumped discretely overboard as urine is 99%
sterile and doesn’t carry the pathogens present in feces. Our jug is
sufficient capacity for two adults for about two-three days but in
reality needs to be emptied daily as it is the only cause of any odour
in the head so it has become part of our nightly routine before turning
in. The problem is with the ammonia formed by the urine which can
apparently be reduced by adding a teaspoon or two of sugar into the
jug. Makes more sense to just empty it more frequently. Don’t know how
much you know about these heads but the info about adding a coffee
filter before a bowel movement is a myth…not neccesary…the hole is
large enough and seems to be strategically placed so that we have never
had any issues with “stripes”. I was pretty squeamish about these
matters and had serious doubts about the claims of no odour but after a
season with it can assure you that the claims are indeed true. We are
in the process of building a 40’er to replace the “Kairos” and yes we
will be installing another Natures Head. If you have any further
questions, don’t hesitate to ask. Cheers, David SV Kairos F28CK

Thanks Dave. I appreciate the detailed input (my kids would say it
was “TMI!”). When you have to clean ‘skid marks’ off, what is
permitted by the manufacturer?
Having not seen one of the dry heads up close, I am curious about how
well the liquid separating aspect works with female anatomy. Any
problems with urine going into the solid waste hole? Has your
significant other come to love the unit as much as you?
In the Airhead, liquids are collect4ed in a separate bottle that holds about a
quart. You empty it overboard (discretely, I suppose) as necessary. I’ve never
used one, but that’s what I remember from the brochure.

Hi John…first you’ll have to get your kids to educate me…what
is T.M.I. ?? As far as racing stripes in the bowl go we have not had
that problem yet but the manufacturer suggests a spray bottle rinse
with a little vinigar in the water and a paper towel wipe which can
then be thrown into the compost. The bowl stays very clean on ours so
that oh say once a week we will give it a quick wipe as above as a
freshen up not because we had to. Everyone must sit to pee (a good
idea anyway) and any urine that is misdirected to the trap door is
redirected by a spillover that leads to the jug. As far as the
admiral is concerned…a resounding YES… Prior to installing this
head we thought holding tank odours were just a fact of life. Also we
are in a club with over 600 sailboats and one pumpout. Sure is nice
to not have to get in line after a long weekend. In fact if you are
just a couple sailing on weekends you will probably only have to
empty it once at the end of the season. Living aboard with two adults
you can figure about every 4-6 weeks. Hope this helps. Cheers, David

I’ve been following this thread about the alternative head (Air
Head/Natures Head) with great interest and have a couple of questions.
Is the head really totally odor free?
Where do you dispose of the hard waste?
Have you encountered any issues with this type of head and the U.S.
Coast Guard or local harbor authorities? Specifically with regards to
usage of it in no a discharge zone? How do they classify this type of
head, same as a port-a-potty?

Hi Paul…with regard to your questions…
The only odour that we have ever noticed is what I would describe
as a “slightly, musty, earthy type smell” which isn’t at all
offensive. As I mentioned in an earlier post the only bad odours we
ever had occurr was when we left urine in the jug…simple
problem with a simple solution.
We bring the waste home…you should see Helenes roses!! When
we go cruising I don’t forsee any problem as it needs emptying so
infrequently. Again, we will bring the contents to shore to be
disposed of unless we are offshore. The finished compost is
comparable in appearance to the same peat moss that the process was
started with. About the only evidence left is that of the toilet
paper which biodegades more slowly.
3)The “Natures Head” is classified as an MSD Type lll which yes puts
it in the same category as a Porta Potty but thats where all
similarities end. (I’ve had a couple of those too…Yucckkk) I
believe Coast Guard approved MSD Type lll heads are OK almost
everywhere. I say almost as I found out after purchasing mine that
mine is legal in all of Canada except for Ontario. As we plan to
leave Ontario, I am not too worried. Cheers, David

Dave -
TMI = “Too Much Information” - and the ‘kids’ are 39 and 40!
Thanks for all of your great reponses on the heads. We’re getting
closer to replacing the forward head. One more try - now with the
Quantum Head Buster - before ripping out and installing an air-head.
John
I am interested in installing a Natures Head in my F28 CK and wanted
to ask you some installation questions. Would you contact me? John
