Headliner

On my F1988 F36/38 we cut the old panels in half and had additional teak battens made. Cleaned the panels and put up new foam backed vinyl. We like the looks with the additional battens. It also made removing the panel from the boat a "lot’ easier.

Using
foam backed vinyl practically guarantees that the foam will fail at some point,
if not for you then for the next owner. Had I kept Ab Initio longer, I
would have replaced the headliner with something solid, like plastic or Formica.

Hi,
Ironically I did carry on with Ab Initio (now “Simply Different”)
and replaced the ceiling panels as Al recommended. I agree that
doing away with the fiberglass/foam/vinyl was a good idea. I had a
white platic panel cut to fit the old panels. The plastic was then
grooved and routed to look like wooden planks. For further effect
the panels were then painted off-white to give it some texture and
the teak trim covering the seams re-varnished in a satin finish. The
end result is truly stunning. I also used white formica on the sides
surrounding the portlights. Very clean and durable. I’ll take some
pics tomorrow.

I might use off-white Starboard, with groves to resemble tongue-ingroove.
