Just wanted to introduce myself to the group. I’m a web developer
living in Los Angeles, and I’m learning to sail. I’m strongly leaning
towards buying a Freedom 21 to sail as a starter boat. It’s appealing
that I can trailer it and not have to pay the crazy marina rents they
charge in Marina Del Rey.
Of course the negative is that most of the “for-sales” I’ve seen are
waaaay too far away to even consider. 
I’ve driven from Michigan to
LA three times and don’t relish another cross-country…but something
about this boat makes me consider it.

It is not a very good starter boat.
I have had mine since new in '86 and I am not done with it yet. When we
get around to finding a bigger boat for retirement sailing I expect to
keep the F21 for my kids and family - and eventually for when I can’t
sail a big one any more.
I am starting to look at it more like a finishing boat.
PS. you will need to add rollers to get it on and off the trailer -
many (half) of the ramps out there are hard to manage with the shoal
keel because the are too shallow or too deep (when deep the keel hits
the trailer at an angle and won’t slide).
