Hello.

Hello one and all. I am now the proud owner of an F21. I believe
she is hull # 138 (HIN: TSP21 138M8 31). She’s a 1983 that’s in
overall very good condition with one major exception… her mast is
broken. I got her for a song because of it, but now I’m finding out
why the previous owner parted with her so readily. Does anyone know
where I can get a used mast for the keel stepped version of the F21?
I know that there’s a F21 for sale on E-bay right now, but that would
only perpetuate the problem of having a boat without a mast. I’ve
checked with some manufacturers (GMT Composites, for instance) and
received an initial estimate in the $6,000 range from each of them.
Can’t do that, have too many kids to send to college.

I’ve seen some photos of what looks to be an aluminum mast inserted
through the deck that has a hinge in the middle of it. If you’ve
done this, please contact me and let me know how difficult that was
and if you had to install any other stays (fore, aft, port, stbd)
since the mast is aluminum and not CF. I’ve found that aluminum
masts are actually pretty easy to get (after posting on CraigsList),
so that may be my best option.

I’ll get her cleaned up, fix the couple of voids in her gel coat and
post some pics. I’ve read the posts from the last 8 months or so,
y’all are a dedicated bunch! Thanks in advance for any help.

Doug

Hi Doug,

Is there any chance of you repairing the carbon mast? Although creating an internal GRP sleeve for the mast and epoxying the broken parts together over the sleeve would be rather a tricky job I guess that there are composite shops out there who would be prepared to take this on?

However please do consider an aluminium alloy mast - most of the F21’s made over here in the UK were fitted with tapered aluminium alloy masts and a few were fitted with non-tapered constant section aluminium alloy masts which to my eye at least looked very “heavy” & wrong. My UK mast was supplied by PROCTOR Masts who are now sadly no longer in business. I’m sure that a USA supplier of aluminium masts could fix you up with a replacement at a far lower cost than a Carbon mast? Aluminium mast for the F21 DO NOT need stays if they are designed right. If you wish I could measure-up the wall thickness of my mast which is also sleeved with an internal aluminium tube reinforcement in the lower parallel section of the mast - let me know if this information would be useful. Lots of aircraft flying around with unstayed cantilever aluminium alloy wings so there is nothing at all special about carbon fibre masts its just that they are lighter than aluminium alloy.

Maybe the Canadian built Nonesuch series of cat rig boats would have a similar mast available which I understand are aluminium? There is a Nonesuch around the 22ft LOA mark I understand - maybe this would be worth investigating?

Yes I do know we spell aluminium oddly over here in the UK but for me typing aluminum is really not instinctive. Good luck.

Wilfred,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, once the mast was broken
gravity took over and the top portion of the mast is now at the
bottom of that part of the bay.

I would be very pleased to receive any and all information regarding
retrofitting my F21 with an ALUMINIUM mast. I have 4 here at the
house now that have been given to me by sailors sympathetic to my
plight (amazing what you can find if you look in the right places).
I just need to know that I’m not wasting my time working on one of
those. I’ve seen the specs in the LINKS (I think) section here that
shows how to insert the mid-mast tabernacle, but there’s no info on
the mast (length, width, thickness required …).

I’ll check on the “Nonesuch”. Thanks again.

Doug

Doug,

If you let me have your direct email address I’ll take some photos tomorrow together with some measurements and I will combinwe this into a word document. I’ll send you this information direct unless you think it may be of interest to the rest of the F21 group?

Hi Wilf,

I think a replacement Al design option would be of interest to all F-
21 owners (at least I am interested). In addition to measurements and
photos, the mast weight would be of interest as well as boom data &
attachment. Sounds like a good project.

Regards,
Nick

I think I have seen some adds for an outfit that builds carbon fiber
masts, etc. in “Messing About in Boats”, and promises reasonable cost I
don’t have access to my collection now. Clyde.
