I have lost the entire rudder one ft below the waterline on my 1982
33ft cat ketch with 4.5(water-line) fixed keel. T.S. Fay a couple of
months ago. The boat was blown ashore and then quickly towed to it’s
mooring ball. The damage was not immediately discernible and I was
unable to dive on the hull until yesterday. What a shock. Boat is at
NAS Jax, Florida. Anyone have any ideas about finding one. I may
eventually have one built but don’t even have a good diagram. John

I lost the rudder on my Mull Freedom 28 about two years ago. At the time I got advise from this group and learned from the group and Paul Dennis that there have been very few documented rudder failures in the Freedom fleet, maybe less than five. So, not too many places to go. I got in touch with GMT Composites near Providence RI. There was another F 28 on the hard near by and they reverse engineered the specs for the new rudder from that boat, then built a custom one. Foam cored, carbon fiber rudder shaft, etc. It was one sweet new rudder assembly. The are an incredible company building spars, rudders etc even for 12 meter America’s cup contenders. The rudder was very expensive, $10,000, but it was fully covered by my State Farm policy. I can highly recommend them from my experience.

John- I’m looking to buy a Freedom of the size you have— but I’m looking for a center board( I like that shallow draft). I’ve owned several boats two of which needed rudder repair- I don’t know how you are with fiberglass but - it looks like a simple design deal to fix the rudder from what I’ve seen of the under water profile-------- a lot depends on how ya feel about doing your own work-

Companies like Foss Foam and Ida Sailor can make new rudders. Do a Google
search for them. Either may have plans for most production boats, but maybe
not. You can probably get close to the original shape of the rudder by using
long, flexible battens and tracing he curve onto paper or plywood for a pattern.

I rebuilt the rudder on my Columbia 31. It’s time and labor intensive, but not
that difficult.

In addition to the other options, you may want to contact “Phil’s
Foils.” They do a lot of replacement rudder work for many types of
boats. www.philsfoils.com

John,
Sounds like I have same model F33 as you (1982 hull # 63). As luck would have it, mine is on the hard (next to my barn) as we speak. I would be happy to send or post pics and give you measurements of my rudder, if you like!
I have had my rudder off and it weighs a “TON”, figuratively speaking. I am AMAZED that it broke off without tearing the transom right off the boat! Speaks well for the strength of that transom and the mounting of the pintle and gudgeons.
Is there any chance of retrieving the sheared part? (It ain¢t going anywhere!) I would think that part would be invaluable when making a new one!
If possible, I would love to see pics of both the shear line and “sections” of the lower part. I would think that if possible, sectioning the lower part (cutting horizontally with a bandsaw ) about every 3 or 4 inches, would reveal a great deal about the original construction.
In any event, I will be happy to give you any ideas and info that would be of help in getting HER seaworthy once again! At least you will be able to fix this without hauling:)
Where is she located?

Wow. I’m also amazed there wasn’t other damage. I’ve
drilled a couple of holes in the lower portion of my F-33 rudder to check for
water in the core (then refilled with epoxy) and the fiberglass is very thick.
My guess is the core was just to provide shape to lay the fiberglass over.

John,

Then I would guess that you too have a fixed keel!

Sir, if possible, I would also like copies of the engineering info that you have on your boat!

I am happy to pay the costs associated with making this happen. If you would, drop me an email and we can work out the details:)
