I have the survey report from recent survey on a 1989 Freedom Schooner.
Multiple random areas of the hull were used to take moisture readings using a Sovereign Quantum Moisture Meter over both port and starboard sides of the hull below the waterline.
The readings were between 18 - 24 shallow and 19 - 30 Deep
These readings were of a High moisture content.
A comparison reading was taken above the waterline which gave the following readings
Deep 10.2 Shallow 12.5
The hull was also checked in the prepared areas for any evidence of osmosis, damage,
cracking or other visible defects.
There were two areas which had higher moisture readings on at the bottom of the rudder
and the other on the starboard side midway at the bottom of the keel.
Random hammer taping was carried out over the hull to check for any evidence of separa-
tion or voids in the coatings or fibreglass below. The soundings were considered satisfac-
tory.
So, how much of a concern are these higher deep readings? I thought it was unusual to see higher readings inside than out!
Are ALL Freedoms balsa cored above the waterline only? This one was built in Penryn we believe.
The vessels has tanks in the bilges, which could affect the readings. The vessel has also been stored ashore for a few years, closed up, not ventilated, cabin soles not lifted. There are known leaks in hatches, and there may have been rainwater in the bilges for some of the time shes been laid up. All this could contribute to a high humidity environment inside the vessel, epescially during british summers of repeated rain and hot weather.
Is it a deal breaker? We are very cautious of these results, given the balsa core, age of the boat etc. We are not scared of a project but really don’t want a boat with wet core.
