Hello,
My 1982 Freedom 40 centre cockpit cat ketch has now nearly completed
her refit. I would like to include a chapter in a forthcoming book
about the cat rig concept and the history of the Freedom cat ketch
range, and wonder if someone could please tell me what they know about
the origins of these, and any production information, or point me in the
right direction to find out more.
Many thanks for any help provided,
Ian Macpherson

Ian,
I have an original 1976 full colour brochure of the freedom 40 and
the orininal factory information for potential customers. I also
have a couple of articles (some of Garry Hoyt). In the past, I had
contact with Ian Galletti, an Englishman who wrote a series of
articles about the catrig in PBO or an other UK sailing periodical.
I could send or email (colour) copies or scans of the material I
have.
Needless to say, Garry Hoyt is the person to contact; he’s the
inventor of the Freedom. Naval Architects Jay Paris (F33/35 ck),
Halsey Herreshof (F40 / F44 also I believe)),Gary Mull (many models,
also catketches)and perhaps others may have interesting comments.
Good luck, and if you have photo’s of your refit, perhaps you can
publish these somewhere on the web (www.flickr.com). I’m refitting
an F44 (wishbone catketch) and am interested to see how you did
things.
Regards,
Michel

You might want to go to the library or amazon.com and grab a copy
of “Ready About” by Garry Hoyt. It’s not just about his efforts with
the cat concept (cat ketch and cat sloop); but he discusses that in a
coupla chapters. It’s an interesting read in and of itself.

Yes, I will certainly post the photos - probably in
about three weeks when the final deckplan is clear.
Thanks again

Ian,
I’m in the process of scanning what I have. I’ll
post the brochures,
specs and articles in PDF here soon. If you want
some of it in JPG
(single page docs) or TIFF (multi-page docs) that’s
possible too,
but the files are huge; I have over a 100 Mb
already. Also, mind you
that I have no publishing rights and only
redistribute these
documents for private use of Freedom owners.

I’ve sent them, but apparently they did not reach you. I’ll try
