I have an '87 Freedom 30 in Annapolis and my v-bert smells pretty bad around the holding tank. I’ve pumped it out, used odorlos, etc., but that only reduces the problem - it doesn’t go away. So I’m preparing to replace the hoses and the tank. Does anyone have a recommendation for a new tank manufacturer? The present tank is the “milk carton” type. I was hoping to move up to fiberglass or stainless. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I’ll second the Ronco (with the corrected URL) from whom I bought a new tank for our Freedom 28. Download the PDF catalog and wander through the many shapes available. They’ll put the fittings wherever you want. I added an inspection port and double vent lines. I’ve since learned that they can also add a “swizzle hose,” which is not the proper name for it, but it’s an open-ended hose inside the tank that, when hooked up to a water source, sprays around the inside, cleaning things out.

I have the same problem. I replaced my hoses and it helped and have
been considering replacing the tank. If you end up replacing it
please post which one you went with and how it worked. I looked
through the 450 ones that Ronco has and none seem very close to the
unusual shape of the one in the F30. Good luck.

does anyone recommend moving the holding tank from the v-berth to under the port-side settee? I could get a bigger tank there and it’s not being used for anything.

I faced that choice on my F36 holding tank relocation project.
The port settee is prime storage space that I felt was too valuable
to use for tankage. But if the space is not being used, It is
certainly an easier installation.

Thanks to everyone who gave advice about my holding tank situation.
Here’s what I decided to do:
I had a polypropolene tank manufacturerd to the same dimensions as
the polyethelene tank I removed from the boat. I’m expecting it any
day now from cctech (gocctech.com) in Rhode Island. I also replaced
my hoses with odor safe hoses and sprayed the entire vberth floor
area where the tank sat with Raritan K.O. (as per Peggy Hall’s
recommendation in her book “Get Rid of Boat Odors”). Right now,
everything smells great – but of course I don’t have the new tank in
yet.
Once the new tank is in, I’m planning on adding a 1" through-hull
vent about 1 foot below the toe rail and very close to the bow to
allow air into the holding tank better. This is also Peggy’s
recommendation (which she gave me on her “headmistress” bulletin
board). I don’t like to add through-hulls, but the science seems to
make sense regarding killing off the odor-causing anerobic bacteria.
If anyone has words of caution about the through-hull, I’d be happy
to hear them. So long as I do it far enough forward I shouldn’t have
any water coming in even when heeling.
I faced that choice on my F36 holding tank relocation project.

I advise crossing the intake hose to the tank; that is, if the head
is on the starboard side, lead the hose to the port side of the
holding tank. Mine was not set up that way and one day when we had
been sailing on a long reach, healed quite far, the joker valve gave
way, and you would not believe the mess! With the hose crossed over,
that cannot happen.

Be careful with CCTECH. I had a bad experience with them. They made
a custom tank for me and I found that it leaked after installation.
They eventually refunded my money, but it was a total PIA to fully
install the tank and find out it leaked. Before you install the
tank, plug all the holes except for the inlet and vent. Attach a
hose to the inlet and the vent and make them the same height above
the tank as they will be on the boat. Fill the tank with water till
it flows out the vent. Each foot of height equals approx 1/2 lb/ sq.
in.of pressure. If they are giving a warrentee of 3 lbs/ sq in.,
that
would be equal to 6’ of rise. Test it before you install it.
Instead of one vent, I installed two 3/4" vents. Now I have thru
ventilation. They are high on the topside, just below the toe rail,
and are never in the water.

I have an '87 Freedom 30 in Annapolis and my v-bert
smells
pretty
bad
around the holding tank. I’ve pumped it out, used
odorlos,
etc.,
but
that only reduces the problem - it doesn’t go away. So
I’m
preparing to
replace the hoses and the tank. Does anyone have a
recommendation
for a
new tank manufacturer? The present tank is the “milk
carton”
type. I
was hoping to move up to fiberglass or stainless. Any
help
would
be
greatly appreciated.
Thanks for the information. You really spooked me and now I’ll make sure I test the tank before installing it.
I also called CCTech to make sure they test the tank before sending it. They said they always pressure test and spark test? the tank, and the guy I spoke with said he doesn’t know of any tanks they’ve sent out that leaked or for which they returned someone’s money for a leak. However, you obviously know what happened to you, even if he doesn’t. Thanks again for the heads up. At least now they’re on notice that I’ll be testing the tank and have reason to be concerned about leaks!

Attach a hose to the inlet and the vent and make them the same height above the tank as they will be on the boat. Fill the tank with water till it flows out the vent. Each foot of height equals approx 1/2 lb/ sq. in.of pressure. If they are giving a warrentee of 3 lbs/ sq in., that would be equal to 6’ of rise. Test it before you install it.Instead of one vent, I installed two 3/4" vents. Now I have thru ventilation. They are high on the topside, just below the toe rail, and are never in the water.-- In freedomyachts2003@yahoogroups.com, “tlynchlaw” <pass@t…> wrote:> Thanks to everyone who gave advice about my holding tank situation. > Here’s what I decided to do:> > I had a polypropolene tank manufacturerd to the same dimensions as > the polyethelene tank I removed from the boat. Give my regards to Burt and Linda at CCTech, and tell them Marc from
Brooklyn says hello. By the way, I invested another $170 in the
failed tank to have it repaired by a local shop to no avail. I am
now having the tank made by Duraweld in Florida. I’ll let you know
how it turns out.
Thanks for the information. You really spooked me and now I’ll
make

They said they always pressure test and spark test? the tank, and

Be careful with CCTECH. I had a bad experience with them. They
made
a custom tank for me and I found that it leaked after
installation.
They eventually refunded my money, but it was a total PIA to fully
install the tank and find out it leaked. Before you install the
tank, plug all the holes except for the inlet and vent. Attach a
hose to the inlet and the vent and make them the same height above
the tank as they will be on the boat. Fill the tank with water
till
it flows out the vent. Each foot of height equals approx 1/2 lb/

in.of pressure. If they are giving a warrentee of 3 lbs/ sq in.,
that
would be equal to 6’ of rise. Test it before you install it.
Instead of one vent, I installed two 3/4" vents. Now I have thru
ventilation. They are high on the topside, just below the toe
rail,
and are never in the water.
Thanks to everyone who gave advice about my holding tank
situation.
Here’s what I decided to do:
I had a polypropolene tank manufacturerd to the same dimensions
as
the polyethelene tank I removed from the boat. I’m expecting it
any
day now from cctech (gocctech.com) in Rhode Island. I also
replaced
my hoses with odor safe hoses and sprayed the entire vberth
floor
area where the tank sat with Raritan K.O. (as per Peggy Hall’s
recommendation in her book “Get Rid of Boat Odors”). Right now,
everything smells great – but of course I don’t have the new
tank
in
yet.
Once the new tank is in, I’m planning on adding a 1" through-
hull
vent about 1 foot below the toe rail and very close to the bow
to
allow air into the holding tank better. This is also Peggy’s
recommendation (which she gave me on her “headmistress” bulletin
board). I don’t like to add through-hulls, but the science
seems
to
make sense regarding killing off the odor-causing anerobic
bacteria.
If anyone has words of caution about the through-hull, I’d be
happy
to hear them. So long as I do it far enough forward I shouldn’t
have
any water coming in even when heeling.
I faced that choice on my F36 holding tank relocation project.
The port settee is prime storage space that I felt was too
valuable
to use for tankage. But if the space is not being used, It is
certainly an easier installation.
does anyone recommend moving the holding tank from the v-
berth
to
under
the port-side settee? I could get a bigger tank there and
it’s
not
being used for anything.
I have the same problem. I replaced my hoses and it helped
and
have
been considering replacing the tank. If you end up
replacing
it
please post which one you went with and how it worked. I
looked
through the 450 ones that Ronco has and none seem very close
to
the
unusual shape of the one in the F30. Good luck.
I’ll second the Ronco (with the corrected URL) from whom I
bought
a new tank for our Freedom 28. Download the PDF catalog and
wander
through the many shapes available. They’ll put the fittings
wherever
you want. I added an inspection port and double vent lines.
I’ve
since learned that they can also add a “swizzle hose,” which
is
not
the proper name for it, but it’s an open-ended hose inside
the
tank
that, when hooked up to a water source, sprays around the
inside,
cleaning things out.
