Holding tank

Posted by crwindy@…> (crwindy@…>)

On my Freedom 36/38, I changed the forward (vee berth) water tank into a Holding
tank. I got a flexible water tank that I fill only when needed.

When you’re pumping more than air out the vents? Seriously, I went
with Snake River, but am less than impressed. I followed the
instructions exactly for the placement of the sensor tape, but I don’t
get accurate readings. The Snake River guys sent me a new sensor kit,
but I don’t feel like going to all the effort to correct the problem.
After all this time, I have a pretty good idea of my usage habits and
the guage is just an added reference.

Where is the head in your boat? Ours is on the rear starboard side,
opposite the rear quarter berth. I’m thinking the lines to a forward
holding tank would be a set up for plugging. Am I out to lunch here?

My head is on the port side, just aft of the vee berth. It is a little longer
run than optimal, but the best I could do. It was suggested to me by Paul
Dennis.

Perhaps you can invent something cheap to use the hose to the deck
pump out point as a gauge? I had a vertical piece of transparent
hose in my drinking water piping to check the tank contents. You
can’t use that in a waste water system because the transparent hose
is not smell free. Perhaps if you use the white hose specifically
for waste, you can see through it? Or maybe better to use the air
vent hose; there is no pressure in that.

Good luck

Paul Dennis in Warren RI is putting in a little warning light that will tell us when our F35 tank is about 3" from the top. Might be a thought for you. There is adequate space in the aft area under the frwd V berth for quite a large holding tank in my H32. However, I would be hesitant to install one in that location due to the long hose run. I would not be overly concerned about clogging the hose, but I WOULD be concerned about odor seepage from the hose, even the best stuff. I would also consider a stainless holding tank for the same reason. Even a Ronco 3/8"wall tank will start to smell in time unless you are absolutely devoted to keeping it de-odorized (in some manner). If I did decided to install a holding tank under the V berth,I would probably consider trying to transport the black water to the tank via 1 1/4", or 1 1/2" schedule 40 PVC, or copper pipe, with short hose pieces on each end to accommodate the required bends. That way you would probably lessen the chance of odor pollution below in the interior of your boat. Face it,
holding tanks are a big pain, and at best a compromise. PWMLarry Kraus <kracherlandl@…> wrote: Where is the head in your boat? Ours is on the rear starboard side, opposite the rear quarter berth. An expensive but perhaps good solution to
the long hose run issue is if you were to use a vacuflush. I believe if you had
space to put the vacuflush near the holding tank the line to the head would be
fully evacuated after each flush.
