Makes sense about mast steps. However in the absence
of any kind of foredeck light I am planning to install an Aqua Signal bow/steaming
light combo on the F32 Hoyt and this will necessitate a small hole for the 3
conductor wire plus four small drilled and tapped holes for the screws holding
it on. Given that there are already larger holes for the wires at the base of
the mast, jib halyard mount and radar blipper I am curious to get some feedback
on others who may have done this or thoughts about these holes in
general. I can certainly understand a multitude of holes for mast steps being a
“no no” by the way!
While
drilling enough holes for mast steps seemed imprudent, I don’t think
there’s a risk in drilling a few holes such as you’ve
suggested. I spoke to someone at GMT Composites when I wanted to add ONE
mast step and they assured me it would not bring down the mast. The no-no
is putting holes too close to each other.

I have two mast steps installed by the factory (for short people who can not reach the top of the sail bundle) according to the previous owner’s invoice. They are all pop riveted in place. Lets hope the next new invention is wireless electricity! I am going to follow your quest for installing a foredeck light. If you dont use your spinnaker it would seem that you could bring the electrical out there and use some kind of adhesive to hold the light onto the mast. I would not think a couple of holes here and there would make it structurally unsave. Now a line of holes all the way up the mast such as installing steps would not help but then again the main sail track has screws going all the way up on both sides of the track. Thats way I am a lowly IT person rather then an engineer!Bob On Mon, May 5, 2008 at 11:33 AM, ron barr wrote:Makes sense about mast steps. I had the Freedom factory (or TPI, I forget) install an Aquasignal
combination foredeck light, steaming light on the mast near the stay
attachment point many years ago. It has worked out well with no problems.

Yes I recently spoke with one chap who worked on the masts
at the factory and he said they often installed Foredeck lights on the mast.
The Aqua unit only needs two small screws – and the hole for the wire of
course.
Did this on Bright Star with the blessing of the Freedom guys. they
recommended drilling, tapping, and then setting the screws into the
mast with epoxy on them. The hole for the wires is inevitable, but
you can pack that with epoxy as well.
