Hove To in Stay-less rig

Hi!

Is there anything particular about a hove to in a stay-less rig? Same procedure? Same feel? Anything I should be thinking about?

Hi Sandor- I don’t believe stayless is the factor as stayed or stayless should be the same. Rather, if the headsail is self-tending- or not. That should be key. If selftending jib, the weather crew/sheet will need to reworked. Hope that helps..

Thanks!

I this a self-tending jib. What do I need to think through? Do I need to rework before sailing or just during the maneuver? The jib has a boom.

Only during the manoeuvre, you will need some kind of preventer to stop the jib self-tacking.

A snatch block to the weather rail should be all you need. Been meaning to try it sometime myself. Fin keel boats are probably a little bit harder to keep in position. Let us know if you try it.

This is extremely helpful. Thank you both!

I just had to heave to for several hours in pretty heavy seas on Lake Erie when the hose to my fuel lift pump developed an air leak.

I didn’t set any headsail, just locked the rudder over to keep turning into the wind. Spent more time broadside to the wind that way, but it did sail me slowly away from Erie’s south shore in a strong ESE wind.

Sick as a dog from the rolling, but the boat itself was stout as hell. That lift pump leak had been dogging me for weeks until I finding figured it out through the process of eliminating every other cause of engine fuel starvation.

Had the same problem new lift pump failed after 2 weeks took a lot of checking and bleeding before i realised that .renewed all line from primary filter and bypassed lifpump for electric pump ,difference unbelievable

Wired pump via a relay with signal picked up from oil pressure sensor ,carry spare just in case . at some point I will remove blank off liftpump

Note wiring from oil pressure feed sets off oil warning lights ,only works if you have pressure gauge, ran wire back to ignition problem solved . Ran engine for a long run this weekend ,now much more responsive to throttle ,starts immediately

Also major problem fitted new filter with built in pump with glass bowl ,came back week later and bowl had smashed. and bilgex soaked in diesel .Replaced it with aluminium base unit

Good work! Not to put too fine a point on this but sounds like you were fore-reaching rather than hove- to :slightly_smiling_face: We were yesterday in SF with gusts to 28 AWS and discussing the same topic! Glad to hear all worked well! Yay!

@Sandor I see you may have a F45 CC… 1990 Freedom 45 (The listing is gone, so can’t see the details.)

I recently took ASA103 and got into a pretty detailed discussion about heaving to with a self tacking jib, then did a bit of research.

Does your F45 have a track with a car for the sheet, or the 2 blocks where the sheet makes a triangle? (If anyone has better terms for these, please let me know.)

With the track, apparently some cars have a pin you can set to keep it to windward. Other people talk about fixing something in track to block the car’s movement, as @newt2u said above.

Without the track, it seems the only answer is to tie it to windward somehow, and I haven’t figured this out yet. I was told a snatch block to the weather rail as @SunnyIsleMark isn’t a good idea because it’s not secure enough. However, I have a feeling the person didn’t consider how small these jibs are. Still, I’ve considered – but have not yet tried – using the same approach with a line running between the forward and midships cleats. This might be foolish.
