I thought I found my first freedom 32

Posted by Aaron Jackson (ajacks@…>)

Hello - I thought I might have found my first boat, a
Freedom 32, until I started looking at the boat closer and moving things. I’m
wondering if I’m being overly picky or not. The boat was built in 1984
and is on the market for 45K and appears to have some damage. I was wondering
if I should spend the money and have a survey done or just keep looking for
another boat. If you don’t mind, check out the pictures I took and let me
know what you think. http://home.comcast.net/~sailbums/boatpics.htm

Thank you,
-AJ

AJ:

I’m certainly not an expert in things marine, but I just bought a
Freedom 30 (my third boat) and I rejected a number of boats that were
in far better shape than the one you’re looking at. Money can fix
pretty much anything, so at the right price it might be worth buying,
but to me it looks like a pretty negelected boat. And this is just
what you can see.

Good luck.

Definitely looks like some hull repair job done stbd side of rudder post. Why all the expanding foam along the wet locker bulkhead border? In general bilge ares and chain locker a bit unkempt, but not too unusual. All in all for a 84 model, presumably well used, not in too bad nick, but should definitely spring for a surveyor. The F32 is a good boat. Hard to meet her qualities in many other designs (ease of use, space, access, etc…) Course I’m not biased…

What the heck is that orange stuff in the bilge?
The stress cracks are normal. It’s just the usual too thick gel-coat
Freedom used. Some of the AC wiring appears to be Romax. Big no-no on
a boat. No big deal to replace with proper stranded tinned wire. I
use Ancor Triplex wire for A/C. Makes for a neat tidy install.
The port transom appears to have been struck at some point.

The boat appears to be fairly well used.

Thank you everyone for you help and
insight. I’m going to write off this F32 and find another one.

Thank you again.
