Hello Group,
Anyone out there have an Ideal V3C verticle windlass. My Freedom 40
has one installed. The wildcat and capstan seized together making it
impossible to operate the capstan or wildcat independantly. After
dismantling the windlass I was able to seperate the two items.
However, even after cleaning and lubricating the metal mating surfaces
of the capstan and wildcat, they still are so tight they will not
rotate independant of one another. Any ideas? I’ve emailed Ideal but
have not heard back as of late. I’m going cruising Friday and would
like to get it back together.
Thanks,
Jay

Jay,
Are you sure the capstan (I suppose that is the rope drum) and
wildcat (I suppose that is the chain wheel) have to be able to
rotate independently? I just dismantled, cleaned, greased and
relocated the Maxwell 1200 vertical windlass on my boat, and on the
Maxwell the drum and chain wheel cannot turn independently.

Not sure I can agree. Can’t speak for the V3C, but I also have a
Maxwell 1200. If you loose the top cap (turn counter clockwise) the
wildcat will run free allowing you to launch the anchor. In this way
they do turn independently. When you tighten the top cap, the wildcat
and capstan do not turn independently.

Michel,
The Ideal vertical windlass (V3C) is designed to allow the capstan and wildcat to operate independantly. In doing so, you can use the capstan to warp the boat out of a slip and not have to remove the chain from the wildcat. The capstan operates all of the time, however, by tightening a friction brake the wildcat then is also engaged. I was surprised to hear from Ideal at 8 PM Pacific time last night. They advised to use emery cloth to remove enough metal on the capstan hub to allow free movement of the wildcat.

Michel,
Maybe your windlass needs service also? It sounds like your Maxwell is set-up the same as an Ideal.

Well Jay, you may be right, but when I had the drum and wheel off
the axis that comes from the motor down below, I found two keys that
hold the drum and chain wheel in place, and these keys definitely
don’t want to move independently…

Jerry, you’re absolutely right; I forgot the manual operation of the
clutch.

Hello Michel,
I just finished cleaning and reassembling my Ideal windlass and now it works as designed. By loosening the capstan cap the wildcat is free and the capstan does the work, tighten the capstan cap and both the capstan and wildcat now operate. I do appreciate your input.
