impressions of hoyt F32

Would like to hear from owners of Hoyt F32. How does it do in heavy air
(+20 kts) What do you like best about the boat? What do you wish
Freedom had done different or better? What are the weak points?

thanks to all

We had it out in 40kts once. While I don’t particuarly want to do it
again it did proved the F32 can take more than I can.

It is a well made and extremely easy to sail vessel.

On the not-so-positive side - you better have lots of large fenders
since gelcoat is the edge that touches first. IMHO the little bit it
gives up pointing is made up off the wind.

Dear F,
I find my boat is solid and spacious and all the systems work
well. It’s very civilized having hot and cold running water. The ice box
is very well insulated and deep, so if you’re short, you’ll need a helper
to reach the bottom (that’s me in our boat). The head is adequate and
private. Ventilation is good.
The boat handles well in wind and depending upon your comfort
level, you can reef early or not. I will put one reef in at 20K and the
boat is quite well balanced with the reefed main and jib. The boat is
happiest off the wind where you can really utilize that big main. If I
never grind a winch again, that’ll be ok with me.
The only thing I wish Hoyt had done differently was to have a
bulkhead mounted dinette table, as found in later models. My prior boat
had one and I loved it.
You’ll have to watch out for leaking around the mast during heavy
rains, although a good silicone caulking should seal the mast.
It’s a very comfortable and easy boat to sail and handle for a couple.
Good luck,
TW

Usually in a good wind of +20 kts, I would put in one reef. Easing
the traveler was what made it easier to handle. The six foot draft
keel gives a lot of lift when it is loaded up and the boat likes 20-25
kts. I’m mostly a weekend sailor and when the wind is increasing and
going over 35 kts, I drop the main and motor. The boat motors well
with the jib up.

Changes… Most would be a slightly larger boat as always. Take a
look at the much newer F35, to see one expert’s changes. The F35 is
more like 32.5 feet because of the swim platform.
For rigging the new Hoyt
boom looks like it would free up the congestion when mooring/anchoring
with the camberspar. I would like the boat to have a sturdy topping
lift easily tightened/loosened to help manage the boom at the dock so
the lazy jacks could be left very loose. I’ve tried to rig a down
haul on the main to make it easier to get down when caught in a
thunderstorm. Too many lines already and I took it off, and put the
boat on autopilot and go forward to pull it down. I like that the
boom ends at the end of the dodger making the big boom less of a worry
with guests on board.

For the interior, I would prefer the aft berth to be setup as a
single and use the space better. There doesn’t seem to be anyway to
get two adults back there. The F35 adds a shower stall and takes out
the nav station. I prefer having the nav station to keep stuff at.
I like the u shaped table as it gives a midboat forward facing seat.

I forgot to mention a rigging change that is recommended for the older
cat sloops. Run the main sheet forward along the boom down to the
base of the mast and back. This keeps the dinghy style cleat on its
block from jamming the main under pressure and some other benifits.
The newer F36/38, F28 and F35 have done some version of this rigging.

Charles,

I had a F36, and you are right. Anchoring with the jib/camberspar
was a pain. I installed a pelican hook so I could release the jib
tack. Wrap the haylard around the jib/camberspar and lift it all
about 6 ft above the deck. I would tie the leach end to lifelines to
keep it from moving around. Now the deck was clear and anchoring
much easier. Even easier than a boat with roller furling. No sheets
in the way.
Thanks for your input on the F32

F
