insect screens for Freedom 35

Posted by rocclear (aronella@…>)

Does anyone know where I can get insect screens for the hatches and
companionway of a 1994 Freedom 35? How have people dealt with this?
Can I get screening and just “place it”?

Thanks,

The solution for me was to purchase insect screening from a camping
supply outfit (ex: Campmor) that has very small holes (Excludes
no-seeums) , and create a lightweight frame using 5mm Luan plywood. I
glued this screening to the framing and use self-adhesive Velcro to
fasten it to the wood framing surrounding each of my hatches. A
similar approach works for the companionway opening where two hatch
boards made of the same 5mm plywood with large openings covered with
screening works fine. Herm

For forward opening deck hatches try a baby supply store (Babies-R-Us, etc.) for the netting that goes over baby strollers and baby carriages. The netting is quite fine, and has an elastic hem that streches over the open hatch and holds the base of the netting in place. I think I paid about $6. My cousin found some screening that was attached to a circular tube
of sand. You lay it outside on the deck over your hatches and open
them from inside. I thought this was a very ingenious solution to
the problem of insect control. Because the screening is on the
outside, you can open and close the hatch from the inside without
moving the screen.
Good luck
