I have a '85 F-25 that I would like to install shore power in. I have
all the parts to do the installation. I want to install a battery
charger, and 2 outlets. The problem I am having is that I can’t find
a good source of information for adding shore power to a boat that
doesn’t have an inboard engine. All the diagrams I have seen are for
boats with alternators, or generators, neither of which I have on my
boat. One of my concerns is about grounding. The book I have shows
the AC circuit tied into the DC ground circuit, with some sort of
isolator. I’m not even sure I need one, but I have looked in West
Marines catalog, but was unable to find an isolator that fits the
description shown in the wiring diagrams I have. Has anyone out there
installed shore power with similar requirements, and can point me in
the right direction as far as this isolator, and to maybe find a
wiring diagram that is more suited to my requirements? I’m sure
others must have installed shore power in boats similar to this. I
would really appreciate any help.

I just finished installing shore power in
my F28. Taking a queue from the Catalina 270 in the next slip and his wiring
diagram, and the books I read which said grounding to a common ground with an
isolator is controversial, I went with Catalina yacht’s approach which is
not to ground the AC side to the negative side of the DC system. I am still
learning in this area, so I am not sure this is the best approach.
