Interesting sailboat design

Posted by Thomas Wales (twales@…>)

Greetings my friends,
I happened to be at the Outward Bound Wilderness location in Maine
yesterday doing some work when I spotted a poster of their new
sail/pulling boat. It’s a 30’ 2 masted “schooner” designed by Roger
Martin of Aerodyne Yacht (among others) fame. It immediately
reminded me of the original Hoyt 40’ Cat Ketch designed by Garry in
the mid 70’s. It’s got 2 free standing carbon fiber spars and rowing
stations. An little known fact about Garry’s prototype 40 was that
it had no engine and was propelled by oars when necessary.
Interesting to me how this new design has been “discovered”…

Interesting since I had many painful experiences in those old
pulling boats which would only sail well in a half gale, when an instructor at
Outward Bound, and also know Roger pretty well since his office if about 300
yards from my house.
