interior teak varnish

Posted by svbagatelle (rmasson@…>)

I am planning to clean the interior teak on my F30, which has become
dark, and revarnish with a clear coat or two of matte finish. I
remember from previous posts that the original finish was Watco
(whoever makes that), but I doubt I will find it here. Since I am
in Abaco, Bahamas, the choice of varnish is going to be limited.
Has anyone tried some of the better known brands, e.g. Varathane?
Also, do I have to remove all finish and restain first? I have used
Starbrite’s Teak Cleaner and Restorer, sponging it off, and some but
not all of the existing stain has come off. It is lighter, but I
assume that any varnish I put on will darken it.
Also, does anyone recommend a varnish or other product to apply
over the existing finish on the teak and holly cabin sole, in order
to protect it and hide scratches?
thanks for any advice

I am in the process of doing a similar job on my F30. Luckily for
me, the PO appears to have rarely oiled the teak, so my teak is quite
light in color. I have simply applied Miniwax Helmsman Spar
Polyurethane (satin) over the existing finish, such as it is. I also
did a little testing, and this finish, and I suspect most oil-based
finishes, can be applied over a clean oil or stain finish. So, if
your teak is now clean and bright, you do not need to retsain it.
The only reason you might want to oil (not stain) the wood would be
to even out the color, if that is an issue. Most varnishes will
darken any wood, some varnishes more than others.

And when you find the right varnish for the cabin sole, please let
know!

Thanks Al. BTW, did you say earlier you had obtained a swim ladder
for your newly purchased F30 from a Chesapeake Bay sailor? If so, I
think it may have been mine, which I gave to Dick Davis … I
removed it when I installed my swim platform.
cheers

Paul – Swim ladder.

No your swim ladder I think made it’s
way to Arizona, it is on the back of my Freedom 28 and much appreciated when
the temp hits over 100!

Is it preferable to teak oil in that it doesn’t darken the wood as
much when you apply it?
