jack stands

Posted by chopper8me (loftusjohn@…>)

Hello there,

I have some good news and bad news. First of all I am the proud new
owner of the former Blue Merle that I purchased off ebay. I have yet
to see the boat in person. I am having it hauled from Mass. to
Detroit, MI to sail in Lake St. Clair and the Detroit River, I can’t
wait. Now for the bad news my boat hauler traded the boat stands that
were with the boat for a lift with a crane onto his trailer.
Therefore I need your help I went to a few web sites but am unsure
what size boat stands I need. Can anybody help? Thanks in advance, one
of the reasons why I purchased the freedom was because of this helpful
site. John Loftus Edison Boat Club Detroit River

Congratulations! When you get the boat get in touch with me for any questions, clarifications, etc. I sold the boat in the Fall of 2002 with an extensive inventory of equipment. I can also explain all of the enhancements and modifications. As for stands, my “guess” would be size SB-2 using Brownell’s (http://www.boatstands.com/) sizing (http://www.boatstands.com/stands.htm). This is based on a 4’ draft (bottom of keel to water line) + an 8" block under the keel. The stands are placed just below the boot stripe. However, I’ll defer the exact measurements to someone who has a F-21 with a full fin keel. You’ll need five (5). Four with flat tops and one with a V top for the bow. -John (Former owner “Blue

Hi John Loftus,

You might want to talk to sailors who store their boats where you are
planning store yours and see what they use or suggest.

I have no idea what a wood cradle cost but buying new stands are
expensive $165 each (West Marine 2006 catalog, page 395).

If you have thoughts of trailering, might be the time to buy one

Good Luck,

Nick

Hi John - welcome to what Vivian calls “The FF’s”
(Freedom Friends)!

Emmylou is on the hard in Norwalk, CT. The attached
photos show how the yard
deployed the 5 jackstands for her. I’ve been aboard
and it is quite stable
like this.

We plan many Spring projects: rebedding stanchions,
replacing lifelines,
repairing and fairing keel, patch and bottom paint
(Petit Trinidad) and
finishing the new wiring.

Need to find the ideal place for our solar panel
(which I cracked by, ahem,
sitting on it) and perhaps a dedicated Garmin handheld
chartplotter.

Please keep us posted on your story.

Yours, Sean Mulligan (and Vivian Werner)

Interesting that the yard used power boat stands (vertical) on a sailboat. Although the bottom of a F-21 is quite flat, sailboats usually get sailboat (angled) stands. In all cases when jack stands were used on my F-21, they were sailboat stands. It could be that the boat yard didn’t have sailboat stands that were short enough. Personally, I’d complain or find another yard. From an insurance standpoint, it “could” be stated that the boat was not properly “blocked”. Sean, I got a Garmin 276C from my son last Christmas which has performed just great. I gave it a real workout on a deliverry run from Briel, NJ to Oxford, MD in just about all kinds of weather short of snow. j32080@… wrote: Interesting that the yard used power boat stands (vertical) on a sailboat. These are actually angle stands that have just been set-up this way. But I am going to have the yard reblock Emmylou to have it higher off the ground so I can work on the bottom of the keel (got a bit chewed up when I grounded us on an oyster bed!). I will ask for a different deployment of stands at that time.

Sean

Looking at this now. http://gpsnow.com/gmmap276c.htm
I own the bluecharts for our region - would need to get a chip - right?
What data were you working with heading to the Chesapeake (thru C&D?)
Oxford looks like where we want to own a home!

The chip for the Chesapeake Bay goes from the Upper Delare bay to Cape Charles in the south. The inbuilt mapping shows the major nav aids even in LI Sound. Just not the other chart features. Yes, you do want to own a home in Oxford.Sean Mulligan <quadmulligan@…> wrote: Looking at this now. http://gpsnow.com/gmmap276c.htm I own the
