jib boom for F36

Posted by douglasgould2000 (douglasgould@…>)

I have a 1986 F36 sloop, hull 6 and the previous owner added roller
furling and removed the jib boom. Any idea where I could obtain one
of these? I think it would enhance sail shape, even if used with the
furler.

If you mean the camberspar, don’t think there’s any way to use it with furling: the spar goes through the jib. The newer Gary Hoyt device is a jib boom and can be used with a furler. Someone on the list added one to their Freedom.

I have a camber spar and it does go through the head sail. It is not something that could be used with a furler…

David,

I added one last year to my Freedom 36 Hull #83. Forespar makes it for Gary now. This is the same one available on the new J-100. It comes in three sizes and I used the middle size. It was easy to install. I recomend a new head sail measured on the boat by your favorite sailmaker. The sail trims very well. You trim it just like the main, using the sheet to adjust the boom and the outhaul to make the telltales fly properly. You truly do not need to leave the cockpit with one of these.

In what way is this jib a performance boost. I’ve just ordered a main & jib replacement for my Freedom 38…steve burke <steveburke1950@…> wrote:

Jay,

The performance difference is small since the sail area of the jib is small. What the furler and Hoyt jib boom combination allows is to adjust the sail shape. You adjust the sail’s wind angle with the boom the fullness with the outhaul. My experience with the camber spar is that it is a one size fits all sail shape due to the fixed tension provided by the camber spar. The biggest benefit is the furler which keeps everyone off deck in a blow.
