I am seriously considering purchasing the Kato Island Dingy Davits. I
know there have been some installed on some Freedom32’s and I wondered
how you liked them? I have tried the Dingy Tow system, however, I
wasn’t happy with it-that doesn’t mean it won’t work for someone
else. I need to get my dingy out of the water. I would love to hear
any comments about this davit system by anyone who has it and/or
another make that may be popular.
I have used Kato davits on my last boat, it is a great
product. I also have a 32 and have used a stern rail
support from edson. It allows the tube to rest at the
height of the stern rail and the dinghy lies flat
against the transom. i have used it for a year and I
like it a lot.

Bob, how does the Edson do with a following sea? My dingy is a RIB, I don’t imagine that makes a difference, however, how do you lift it up? I have a dingy lift, but it isn’t strong enough to lift the dingy up Another question: I don’t like the size of my Edson wheel-36" I feel it encroaches on the seating area too much HAs anybody gone to a smaller wheel-I’m thinking about trying to borrow someone’s wheel to try out I thought maybe 30". ANybody had any luck in that area? Bob Frew <rfrew@…> wrote: Dear Sward,I have used Kato davits on my last boat, it is a greatproduct. I also have a 32 and have used a stern railsupport from edson. I don’t own davits, but by all accounts, Kato makes fine ones. I would also suggest that you have a look at Garhauer’s davits, www.garhauermarine.com. They seem quite well made (I own a lot of Garhauer stuff and all of it is well-made) and cost all of $600, about half what other davits cost. I keep thinking I should buy a Garhauer davit before they realize they’re giving it away and raise the price.

On my 36, I’ve gone from a 34" wheel to a 22" for the same reasons.
It is now much easier to move around in the cockpit. The smaller
wheel gives less leverage, but, I just pay more attention to sail
trim to reduce the weather helm that would have been less
objectionable with the larger wheel.

I feel it encroaches on the seating area too much HAs anybody gone

I have a light mercury dinghy and I just lift it in
place. We had high winds on the nose from block island
and it worked fine the odd wave would push it out a
few inches otherwise it was fine. I have not had a
following sea experience yet. I got it at defender for
200+
