leaking around companionway sliding hatch

Posted by svbagatelle (svbagatelle@…>)

Does anyone have the same problem I have on my F30: the horizontal
sliding panel that covers the companionway (overhead) leaks, especially
at one of the forward corners. Since the plexiglass sliding panel just
rests on an aluminum frame, it is obviously not water tight. In a
rainstorm a lot of water gets in, and the cabin sole below it is
stained as a result. Has anyone addressed this problem? It’s not
obvious to me how it can be made more water tight.

Paul:

Our 30’s seem to be aging with the same problems. My hatch just started leaking this season, but rather than leaking onto the cabin sole, the water runs down the top of the headliner and comes out at the rear of the galley. I haven’t fixed it yet, but I recall reading in an archived post that the fix is to remove the cover that the hatch slides into and clean, recaulk, and reinstall. As you note, there’s no way to make the hatch itself watertight; the fix lies in assuring proper drainage. Has anyone done this?

Al, I think I read that you had a bimini made for your 30. Do you have a picture or a description? I have a dodger, but I don’t use it. I sale in the Salem Sound/ Marblehead area.__________________________________________________Do You Yahoo!?Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

We have had the same problem on our 35, when it is stored for the winter.
We noticed it last year. This year I checked the leveling on the boat with
a level. When they blocked it for the winter, they blocked it bow up and
again we had the leak. Since it never leaks when the boat is in the water,
I can only assum that it should be blocked so the sliding hatch is level
fore and aft or even slightly bow low, since that’s the way it sits in the
water.

Once we cover the boat for the winter, it isn’t a problem, but next year I
plan on making sure its blocked as it sits in the water.

I would be interested in any other experiences with this problem.

Jay

I had the same problem on an '87 F30 last year and solved it, but I
can only half way remember. I THINK that I took everything off and
decided that the problem was that the water could not drain FORWARD
because of gunk. I cleaned it out and I have had no problem since.

The F 36 and its sistership the F30 have a 3/8" plexi slider that
rides on a "C"shaped channel. The leaking problem is caused , in
part,
by dirt in the channel, preventing the channels from draining
forward.
A bigger problem is the fact that as the channel fills with water
and
does not drain, the water infiltrates the horizontal screw holes
that
hold the channel in place and causes core rot and delamination
around
the hatchway.

To fix the leak, remove the seahood over the slider. The channels
will
be exposed and you can see if they are blocked. That’s the easy
part.
If the leak is in the seam between the channel and its bed,
rebedding
the channels is required. Push the slider all the way forward and
remove the screws from the exposed portion of one channel. Push the
slider back and remove the screws from the forward portion of the
same
channel. The channel is bedded with 5200, so some careful, patient,
work with a couple of paint scrapers is required on both the
horizontal and vertical faces. Don’t bend the channel. When the
channel is free, remove it and the slider. Repeat on the other side.

Now is a good time to replace the sun damaged slider if you want. I
went up a size to 1/2" plexi for greater stiffness.

Check the screw holes for rot, if none, rebed and reassemble. If
there
is rot, you got a whole 'nother bucket of grief.

A quick fix is to have a piece of Sunbrella made up to cover the
slider and snap in place.
