I’d use a composting toilet or Incinolet before using a Lectra-San.
Lectra-San doesn’t do anything for you in “zero-discharge” zones
which seem to be cropping up. Also I don’t like the idea of
discharging poisonous chemicals. They’re probably worse for the
environment than human waste.

I’ve known a couple of people that had Lectra-San systems in their boats, and they loved them. The nice thing about them is that they treat waste with electrodes, and as a result don’t dump any toxic chem’s into the water. As a matter of fact, that’s one of the main features that Raritan touts. Unfortunately, they are still illegal in “no discharge” areas. But most realize that it’s really political “one-size-fits-all” BS! Too bad some big lobby like Boat US doesn’t take that one on, I guess Raritan doesn’t want to spend the money to fight that battle, and all the environmental whackos that would go berserk if something like the Lectra-San was approved, but what do I know…PWM

Boat US and Raritan have taken up the issue about No Discharge Zones in the form
of a Bill that Rep. Saxton has been trying to get past for the last 4 years. 2
studies were done this year one by the GOA (at the request of Saxton) which was
not too biased and one by the EPA and guess what they discovered No Discharge
Zones are working and are just great. Never mind the fact that there are no
provisions in the No Discharge application to be sure that pump outs continue to
function. So, you could be like NJ who approved a No Discharge Zone in the Shark
River and 6 months later not a single functioning pump out existed - now…
where do you suppose the holding tanks were being emptied?
I work for Raritan and monitor some of the website newsgroups - anyone
interested in knowing more about Saxton’s Bill or additional information I would
be happy to provide it.

Kim,
I would definitely like to know more about Saxton’s bill, even the # would be fine.
Your comment about the Shark River reminds me of one time when I was bringing one of my previous boats(sorry, not a Freedom) from Wa. down to So. CA. kinda late in the season. I decided to lay over in San Fran’ to lick our wounds at the St. Francis Yacht Club. After a few day there we ask the club where we could pump-out. Well, to make a long story short, they couldn’t find an operational pump-out facility in the bay. Later we proceeded to the Berkeley Marina clear across in East Bay, and were told the same thing. Bottom line, it appears that the Pol’s just want the boxes checked, no matter if it works, or not. And this in San Francisco, where the whole thing pretty much started for the West coast!!! Go Figure!

Funny, Paul -
when we brough Bright Star up from Maryland, we spent two days in
Cape May because of rain, fog, and predicted thunderstorms. I was
able to find diesel, filters, shackles, you name it… but not one
working pumpout facility. Apparently, pumpout equipment is highly
susceptible to bad weather.

Dear Paul - Sorry this has taken a little while. I am sorry to say that I have
gotten so disgusted with the whole process that I have given up keeping track of
what Boat US and Saxton’s office are doing. The Bill started off as HR3673 - the
Recreational Waters Protection Act and in the 108th Congress was re-introduced
as HR1027 as of today I find no Bill for 2005-2006 but I have contacted Saxton’s
office to determine the status. I can tell you that after 10 years of asking the
NMMA (National Marine Manufacturers Association) to get involved they finally
are. The GAO report that was recently completed was done at the request of
Saxton’s office. EPA countered with theirs and that is the last time I was
directly involved. However as the NMMA progresses I will become more invovled.
Hope this helps and I will keep you posted as I find out more information, if
you are still interested.
Thanks,
Kim
