lighting

Posted by Thomas Wales (twales@…>)

Greetings,
I just read an interesting statistic on lighting. Incandescent
lights use about 9 times more power than LED’s. Moreover, LED’s can
last up to 10 years. I got this from a brochure from Efficiency
Maine, a conservation/education organization under the subject of exit lights.
Does anyone have any experience or comments about this?
Thanks,
TW

I have just replaced two incandescents in my cabin dome light with
LED bulbs from Westmarine ($20/each). The light is not quite as
bright, but it certainly uses less current. I have also replaced the
reading lights with cold-cathode fluorescents (about 1/3 of the
incandescents’ amperage) and am very happy with the quality and
brightness. The new reading lamps are from Taylorbrite, and cost
about $70 from Defender.

I replaced the majority of my interior incandescent lights with LED
based lights from www.DoctorLED.com. I used the Mars dome units as
they utilize warm LEDs which replicate the light spectrum of
incandescent bulbs. I hate the cold light of white LEDs and cool
florescent bulbs, but I am very happy with the color of the warm LEDs.
In the head and for one of the galley units I used the R/W combo which
works is very nice.

I had previously replaced all of my running lights with their Polar
Star LED lights and they’ve worked great.

Now I need to find a replacement for my Perko anchor/steaming light. I
replaced the festoon bulbs with a LED based bulb made by Ancor (despite
the warning that they weren’t supposed to be used for navigation
lights), and it worked OK, but the output is too low. Now I’m looking
for something which is compliant.

Check out BEBI Electronics (www.bebi-electronics.com). Great LED products designed by sailors to be bomb proof and built with first class components to last. Very fair prices and great customer service. As an added bonus their products arrive via Air-Post sporting some very pretty stamps from the Fiji Islands. If you are comfortable using a solder gun you should have no problem incorporating their light clusters into your fixtures whether they are cabin, exterior or navigation. I rebuilt an old Guest masthead tri-color navigation/anchor light using Bebi LED light clusters to replace a very expensive OMG fixture that filled with rain water half way through the first season and never dried out. Rick Wright s/v ANNIE Davis Creek, MD P.S I have no connection with Bebi electronics, I am merely a very pleased customer. I also have a OMG masthead LED tricolor / anchor light for sale.
