Hi All: In July 2004 my F33 catketch Lady Marion, hull #55 was hit
during a severe thunderstorm in Jacksonville,Fl. while at a mooring
among 71 other boats some with taller masts than mine. The strike
dissolved and shredded my Shakespeare whip on top of the mainmast,
wiped out the alternator and the Data Marine depth display. The
mast-top Perko lights were shot and required replacement and new in
mast wiring. No other damage has been found with the exception of the
Metz stainless whip on the mizzen mast which completely vanished. I
didn’t miss it until several days later when rowing back to shore I
noticed it. Radios were not installed but later proved the coax to be
ok. There was absolutely no visible hull damage or mast damage.
Subsequent sailing has now brought the masts down. I firmly believe
that the strike producing “spot” in a thunderstorm will “get” you if
you are there when it is ready to go.
You obviously don’t have to be the tallest object. Oh well, go figure!

Hi Fargo and All What I was trying to say is that if there is any
mast damage it hasn’t shown up yet. It is notable that I haven’t
been out in over 25k with all sails up and this is in the 1.3 mile
wide area by about 8 mile long stretch of the St John’s river where I
sail lately and keep the boat. Chop might to 2.5 ft. I really feel
that if the masts were going to fail it would have happened already.
Incidentally, the mast bottoms and aluminum steps show no damage. We
will see!!! John Jones
