Line clutches for F32

Posted by Larry and Linda Kraus (kracherlandl@…>)

Hi all,

Our 1984 F32 has what appears to be the original line clutches. These
are an all metal clutch that engages and holds the line by closing down
on the line as it tries to go through the clutch. There is no fold down,
locking lever on the style clutch. We’re replacing them as they do not
adequately hold the main and jib halyard(s).

So, has anyone replaced these rope (line) clutches? Any experiences,
good or bad. A local yard is singing praises of the Spinlock XA model.

I have two older models and they are great.
I just rebuilt both last year (after ~15 years) using the parts from the XA and
the parts are relatively cheap and easy to repair.

Hi Bob,

I didn’t understand your message. Are these older models or version of
the Spinlock XA, or some other brand?

Spinlock
XAs were standard on my firmer F30. I replaced them a few years ago with
the newer XAS. Some new old stock XAs may still be available.

I
found Practical Sailor’s review to be spot on: they held the line
tenaciously, but were a bit difficult to release under load. PS said that
the comparable Lewmar, the D1 I think, did not hold quite as well but was
easier to release under load.

Based on the Practical Sailor review when I replaced my original
line stoppers I went with the Lewmars.
I’ve been happy with them but be careful on sizing as each size accommodates
a more limited range of line sizes then the spinlocks so if you have different
line sizes or change them later it can be an issue.

My experience is that Garhauer rope clutches, like most of their gear), are
better than all of them. All stainless, no plastic, stronger, more durable and
don’t tear up the line asa much.

I put two Garhaier triple rope cluuches on the cabintop of my Columbia, along
with attendant standup blocks, turning blocks and deck organizers. There’s
$1500 worth of garhauer hardware on the cabintop, but that’s a lot less than if
I had chosen Lewmar or Harken.

Thanks for the responses. I’ll do 2 things:

  1. Check out the Practical Sailor evaluation.

  2. Check out the Lewmars.

The problem I’m currently trying to solve is the slipping on the
halyards. When I hear about slippage, I get concerned. Line sizing is an
issue as my halyards and main sheet are 1/2" or 9/16" (hard to measure)
and the other lines are 3/8" The Spinlocks cover that range.

Based on your comments, I’ve got more to research. Thanks

One of the positive aspects of the lewmars are they are very
easy to release as they have a different mechanism then other line brakes.

The Garhauers are all Stainless Steel, with no plastic parts. They have a either
a 5 or 10-year warranty (I forget which). I do not notice any slip and they are
easy to release.

Spinlock has too many plastic parts.

Lewmars cost twice as much and also have plastic parts.

Our 1984 F32 has what appears to be the original line clutches. These
are an all metal clutch that engages and holds the line by closing down
on the line as it tries to go through the clutch. There is no fold
down,
locking lever on the style clutch. We’re replacing them as they do not
adequately hold the main and jib halyard(s).

So, has anyone replaced these rope (line) clutches? Any experiences,
good or bad. A local yard is singing praises of the Spinlock XA model.

Garhauer
has introduced a new line of rope clutches that are a lot slicker than their
older ones. They are stainless or aluminum bodied and have an arm that
lengthens to increase leverage for releasing. I haven’t seen them reviewed
anywhere. They were so neat that I bought one at last year’s Annapolis boat
show, but sold my F30 before I installed it. http://garhauermarine.com/images/product/SN-12.jpg
Garhauer
gives good discounts at their booth at the Annapolis show (starts next Thursday)
and you get to chat with the owners.

The Garhauers are all Stainless Steel, with no
plastic parts. They have a either a 5 or 10-year warranty (I forget which). I
do not notice any slip and they are easy to release.

Spinlock has too many plastic parts.

Lewmars cost twice as much and also have plastic parts.

One of the positive aspects of the lewmars are they are very easy to
release as they have a different mechanism then other line brakes.

Re Garhaurer: Any slippage or clutch being too hard to open under
tension? I’ve got a rigid Garhaurer boom vang and I’ve been happy with
that. I’ll give them a look.

Thanks

My experience is that Garhauer rope clutches, like most of their
gear), are better than all of them. All stainless, no plastic,
stronger, more durable and don’t tear up the line asa much.

I put two Garhaier triple rope cluuches on the cabintop of my
Columbia, along with attendant standup blocks, turning blocks and
deck
organizers. There’s $1500 worth of garhauer hardware on the cabintop,

but that’s a lot less than if I had chosen Lewmar or Harken.

Based on the Practical Sailor review when I replaced my original
line
stoppers I went with the Lewmars.

I’ve been happy with them but be careful on sizing as each size
accommodates
a more limited range of line sizes then the spinlocks so if you
have
different line sizes or change them later it can be an issue.

Spinlock XAs were standard on my firmer F30. I replaced them a
few years
ago with the newer XAS. Some new old stock XAs may still be
available.

I found Practical Sailor’s review to be spot on: they held the
line
tenaciously, but were a bit difficult to release under load. PS
said
that
the comparable Lewmar, the D1 I think, did not hold quite as
well
but was
easier to release under load.
