Since, as far as I know, anyone can hang out a Marine Surveyor shingle
and claim to be one, I always feel that the experience of others can
be a big help in choosing one, so I thought I’d ask here.
There are a couple of national/global associations that publish member
lists, but it seems to me that specific knowledge of Freedom boats
might be very helpful. Freedoms have some special design aspects
(part of their appeal) like the carbon fiber masts, and cored hulls
that I doubt all surveyors are familiar with. Has anyone in my area
(the NE) had any good experiences with a particular surveyor and the
Freedoms? Someone you might recommend?

I had my F40/40 surveyed in May by Johnson Marine Services. They claimed to
have knowledge of Freedoms. They didn’t. I would recommend contacting Paul
Dennis (former Freedom production manager). He referred me to two surveyors, I
no longer have their info, that have experience surveying Freedoms. Both are
from the Newport area. I wish I had employed one of them!

Yes, anyone can advertising themselves as a marine surveyor. You should examine their credentials to see if they are qualified to make such a claim. The two largest, most respected, marine surveying societies are National Association of Marine Surveyors(NAMS) and the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors(SAMS). These organizations limit membership to knowledgeable individuals and certify their abilities through testing and awarding the titles of Certified Marine Surveyor(CMS) for NAMS and Accredited Marine Surveyor(AMS) for SAMS. A word of caution, Many insurance companies and lending institutions do not accept surveys from surveyors who are not members of one of these organizations. So, before paying someone, check that their work will be acceptable to all parties. That said:I would like to offer my services as your marine surveyor.Personally, I am a member of SAMS. I have been surveying boats for about 1-1/2 years. I am a member of the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC), and participate as a member of the Project Technical Committee (PTC) creating the standards used as a guide to boat-builders world-wide. I worked for Tillotson Pearson Inc.(TPI) back in the late 70’s building the original Freedom 40 and helping to develop the F40AC, F33, F44 and F39. I traveled the country commissioning most of the boats from 1978 until I left in 1981 to return to school. After completing my engineering degree, I tried designing automated industrial machinery for several years but missed the boats so I returned to work for Freedom Yachts, designing the F35 and F40/40. I personally own F36 #71, “Early Start” that I have moored at Point Judith, RI, so I am also an occasional member of the Freedom Owners Group on Yahoo. Please feel free to give me a call or email to discuss any questions you may have. You may also find my website helpful. Dwight EscaleraF36-71 "Early Start"Dwight C.
