Looking for Hoyt F32, Hoyt F33, Mull 30 (maybe M36)

Posted by Medium Al (hjulbyhavn@…>)

I am starting to look for a mid-sized Freedom to add to or to replace
my F21. My current thinking is a Shoal Draft Hoyt F32, one of the
F33’s, or a Mull F30 although it is a bit small.

I have looked at the Yachtworld listing and seen a few others from time
to time but wonder if there are more out there.

I will sail it on Lake Superior for now. If it is not in good shape the
price need to match. If the fundamental systems are in good order then
I might sail it back next summer (I teach) and avoid having to pay
shipping.

All opinions, experiences and advice are encouraged, as are referrals.

I will read messages here and arrange for exchange of proper
identification through this board.

I could possibly be selling my Mull 28. It is very similar to the F30, except no
enclosed after cabin, just a large quarter berth, the 28 has a small sit-down
nav table. From the galley forward they are almost identical. However, from
your comments, it may be too small for you. Let me know if you are interested.

The M28 is indeed on the small side, although I can imagine that the
open quarter birth is more user friendly. We want to be able to spend
month on board, or at least use it as out base, so storage is very
important.

If you want to know more about the Mull 28 let me know and I will give you an off line email
address.

Storage is not the Mull 28’s long suit. The aft quarter berth has the
fuel tank under it, the settees have water tanks under them, and the
waste tank takes up some of the area under the V-berth. I added
narrow shelves on the upper sides of the V-berth area (similar to the
ones I had in my Freedom 25). There is some room behind the settee
back cushions, and an area at the forward end of the port settee.
However, the boat does have a hanging locker, and a huge cockpit
locker area (which needs some structure to exploit its volume. The
quarter berth is large, probably able to accommodate a 300-pounder.
There is good storage in the main cabin for books, and a small
cabinet for smallish items. The galley has limited storage, but has a
cute hatch to enable throwing trash into a can in the cockpit locker.
There is no room in the bilges for storing anything. Surprisingly, I
was told the first owner was a liveaboard. Herm

We have a Mull
28, mostly day sail it but we have weekended on it a number of times. The quarter
berth is huge, as big as many 35 footers as the boat carries its beam well aft.
If you consider that storage space, vs a berth, then along with the other space
Herm mentions, it has quite a bit. For a couple, I have always felt the boat
was equivalent to most 30 footers. It is one huge 28 like all the Freedoms,
they seem to size about 2 feet bigger than their actual size, especially for
their era.
